I have always been intrigued by the vast variety of cartridges available and have ALWAYS had my eye on what I would like to own next, but lately have really not been that interested in adding anything to my collection.

I'm depressed. Could it be that I have become satisfied with what I have and no longer feel the overwhelming compulsion to continually spend money better spent on my kid's braces on guns?

?? :eek: Should I just take up drinking and try to drown my sorrows? :drink4: Have I become cured, or have I become hopelessly sick? Has anyone else gone through this?

Please help.....

I think you need to see a doctor. How could have to many guns? Thats like saying I'm having too much fun, or I have too much money.
Honestly, I know exactly what you mean. I'm kind of happy with my collection as well and I also have kids that I love spending money on and spending time with. I think it's called getting your prioritys straight. Sometimes that not the funniest way to do it but the correct or the decent way. Just get what you need and not what you want and you'll be ok. My kids come first then I.
Now if I hit the power ball I want them all, one of each model and caliber please.

Better rethink your collection. I can always wish for a different action, if not caliber, in my safe. Now that your have all the old calibers, probably time to work on the newest Whiz-Bang hotrods.

I would be working the other way back to a older cartridge like the .257, .250 etc. in a bolt, except the gun fund is too low right now.

How about a project from ground up?

I always have the urge to buy a new gun, if I didn't, I think I would need to see a shrink. :-D

Your kids will get older and go away. You will then be left with your guns. If you buy right, the guns will eventually go up in value. The kids might not. :-D :-D :-D

I guess I am pretty much at the same place. I would hate to think about how many thousands of hours I have spent crooning over one rifle or another, reading gun mags, books etc..... I really enjoy the rifles I have but really have no desire to keep up the pace that I have had for the last several years. I went thru the same thing with hunting and archery. I watched so many hunting and how to videos and spent thousands of hours shooting bow in leagues and tournys that finally after about 15 years I just lost interest. I still love to hunt, but the fire is no longer there like it used to be. Even now I have to be careful how many hunting videos I watch or it just turns it all into killing, not the thrill of the hunt and the enjoyment of the meat.

dharvey, do you shoot much in the way of comps?
Small bore field is fun or silohette and only use an average plinker, not your most whizz-bang rifle.
Maybe it's time to find a challenge for yourself?
Find a cheapie rifle that isn't renowned especially for it's accuracy.
Like say a 6.5x50 Jap, maybe an old cartridge like 32-20, or for a real challenge the renowned loser rifle, a Mannlicher Carcano.
Then just spend your time training yourself to shoot it well.
Do minimal adjustment, retain the standard furniture, adjust the bedding if it needs it and fix stuff like headspacing, bad sights, etc.
Basically get an average rifle to shoot well, or more accurately you to shoot an average rifle well.
And stick to factory ammo for a real challenge.
Then, if you're tired of it, just sell it on.
It may open you mind though.
Or get into old stuff like 577/450 Martinis and Sniders.
That'll really open your mind!!

I think it's called maturity. Your kids are the most important thing you will ever have the ability to influence. Someday, when they are grown and gone, you will have the time and money to indulge yourself again. Most of the people I know that have great collections are retirement age and only built the collection in the last few years. It gives you something to look forward to.

I wouldn't worry about it. It has happened to most of us to some extent or another at one time. I know it did me and what got me going again is Big Bores. Started with a new Shiloh Sharps The Quigley model .45-110 and hasn't died down yet. Also going into collecting a certain make or model or caliber rifles can keep the fires burning. Lawdog
