Author Topic: Precision rifle success, 220 grain bullet with 80 grains 777 (Read 823 times)

Once again the precision rifle bullet performed to its best. I shot a doe tonight at about 40-50 yds. The bullet went in her front shoulder as she was quartering towards me. It proceeded through her heart and destroyed everything in its path. I recovered the bullet and it retained its mass and mushroomed to almost twice its size. Just thought I'd report back for those who are considering changing bullets. Give these a try if they shoot well out of your gun. Take care and good luck all, Greg

I use the PR 195 gr. duplex sabots in my 50 Cal Encore. Great success with them. :-D

Here are a couple of pics of both bullets I have recovered from the deer I shot with the 220 dead centers. The one on the left was 80 grains 777 with a 220 grain bullet shot at around 50 yds. The one on the right was 100 grains 777 and a 220 grain dead center shot at maybe 20 yards. Not sure what made the difference, the powder charge or the distance. Judge for yourself. I just picked up some .38 Hornady 158 XTP-HP for my daughters .45, but after seein those 2 bullets.... I think I need to order some .357 195g DCs.
She will be using 50-60g 7773Fg at no more than 35yds from a tree stand on 140lb buck. Congrats!

I think cabelas has the best prices on them, I would feel comfortable recommending the dead centers (orange tip) or the QT's which I think cabelas calls their extended range bullets (blue tip). I ordered six 12 packs of the dead centers after I shot my 1st deer with them. You never know, you may have great luck with the XTP's. But, with that low of a powder charge I would opt for the all lead, polymer tip bullet. My gun grouped incredibly well with the hornady's but the deer just laughed at them and ran forever without me finding them. I was ready to give up muzzleloading before these bullets were recommended to me by the members of this site. I honestly think you'll be extremely happy with either of these 2 bullets. Good luck to you and your daughter. And, although I may sound like it, I have absolutely no link to precison rifle whatsoever. They simply brought me from the point of giving up muzzleloading to making it my favorite season. If you have any questions, call them. I bough mine directly from Precision Rifle. I got a break on ordering 240 of them 24 packs of 10. The more you order the better the price. I will have these bullets for some years. I might order more if I think I will stay with them from now on and it looks like that is the way I am heading.

I echo what Redhawk said. I would order directly from PR. Cecil, the owner is great to deal with. I bet he would love to see those recovered slugs.

That load of a 220 grain DC over 80 grains of 777 fffg is the EXACT load I shoot in my Knight Wolverine. Smoked a 5 point about 10 days ago with it.
