Smokeless 44-40 loads

Esteemed Board

I just cast some 1-30 200 gr bullets for the 44-40.  I plan to use smokeless, I'm not sure which one yer, but obviously not overly fast with a 1-30 bullet!  My question is, with Alox lube, do I want to use a card wad to protect the base of the bullet, or load them nekked?

Nekkid, don't use card wads with smokeless, with all the airspace, it could drop down in the case, and create an unpredictable high pressure situation. The card wad is meant to protect the base of the bullet when using full case black powder loads.  Even then, in these smaller cases of 40 grains BP or less, the card is really not needed.  Factory loads of the 19th century rarely used them in this class of cartridge.
