Old Model Single Six safety conversion: ruin value???
« on: August 30, 2005, 04:55:03 AM »
I have an Old Model Single Six I bought at an estate sale for $50  ( )  .  However, it needs refinishing. Ruger will do it for $50, but they will only do it if it gets updated by installing the transfer bar ignition safety conversion.  The obvious question is, will the conversion ruin the value of the gun????

The gun needs the refinishing, local smith charges $90 for polish and reblue; needs grips, I can find those I suppose. Just wondering what the decision point is on the safety update.

Thanks!

Ruger returns the parts to you when they do the conversion. It's reversable. Just change out the parts again. IF you have the parts no value harm done. If you don't then yes the value is reduced to a collector.

Even with the parts there's some value taken from it.  Even so, after it's refinished and all, it's gonna lose some value anyways.

Well, I shipped the gun to Ruger in early September for the conversion and re-blueing.  Just got the gun back. It came in what appears to be an old, original Single Six box, with all the original parts included in a baggie.  Ruger couldn't, or wouldn't spend the time to polish and buff out all the minor pitting in the gun (or so they forewarned me), but darned if I can see where they didn't polish it. Re-blue job looks first rate to me. Hammer polished on the sides bright n shiny, the top is blued (?) to match the rest of the gun.  It appears they did something to tighten the sloppy cylinder play.  Haven't shot it, need some grips.

For $50 bucks, I don't think I went wrong. In fact, it still has the 3 screws, which I thought would be replaced with pins. I oiled her up, and put her in the safe till I can get some grips; I'll post how it shoots later on. Hope this helps someone contemplating the conversion or the blue job.
