Okay guys I am stumped. I have Hornady New Dimension dies in 7MM-08.

I measure unfired/unprimed brass from Winchester with my Stoney Point head and shoulder gage and get 1.618.

I measure fireformed brass and get 1.620.

No matter how I adjust the FL size die the best I can get on FL sized brass is 1.623. That is .003 longer!!!.

I emailed Stoney Point and they are stumped. I also emailed Hornaday and they have not answered yet.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

is the expander pin pulling and stretching the brass during the withdrawal from the case possibly? You could remove the expander pin, and FL size a case and measure.

Your shell holder may be a little too thick. I had this happen with another caliber and found the Lee shell holder was .005 thicker than a RCBS. I ground the top surface on a belt sander and took off about .010" to give me a little room to work. The shoulder set back to the proper length with the thinner shell holder.

I just sized and loaded up 50 Rounds of 243wssm. Die adjusted as appropriate for new brass. Couldn't close the bolt without forcing it when I got to the range. Went home and double checked. Had to seat the die further onto the shell holder so my press handle on the down stroke actually cams over very firmly. I need to have a few thousandths taken off the bottom of my die (progressive machine) or try to size the cases on a single stage press.

Like the posts above mentioned, try a different brand of shell holder, shave your shell holder, or have a machinist shave off a little of your die.

Thanks for you input. Steve is right you really have to put some pressure on it but it got there. I will probably have a little milled off the shell holder and only use it with that set of dies.

Brass has some memory to it. Our guns would not work if it didn't. I like to leave the brass in the die for a second or two. About the amount of time it takes to roll another over the lube pad.
