Has anyone out there tried a Tubbs 6XC for HP silhouette?

I am by no means a seasoned veteran when it comes to silhouette but there are better choices for knocking down steel targets than the 6mm.  I have been told by veterans of the sport on this forum that the 6mm bullets are a craps shoot when it comes to knocking down rams.  The case would be better suited necked up to 6.5 or 7mm.  You have more bullet mass, more momentum, and more dwell time on target, with the the heavier bullets.

One of the guys down here has a T2K in 6XC and occasionally brings it to matches to play. (He's not shooting it in the matches.)
I turned it on rams once and needed 3 hits to topple one ram. (This was prone off a bipod. The rifle is scary accurate and all 3 were closely grouped in the upper half of the animal, just back of the shoulder. Shouldn't have needed extra hits.)
I don't remember what bullet or load he brought along that day -- we were just interested in the rifle -- but IIRC it was 107s and whatever he and David set up for LR.
I don't know the round beyond shooting it on a couple of different days in that rifle...a few shots each time. That's hardly valid testing. That said, I'd view it as a slightly anemic .243 and that round isn't very impressive on rams.
Others may have different opinions and much more experience and the new 115 gr bullets 'might' make a difference...
I'd bet that David has tried it on at least a few rams. Why don't you give him a call?

I would heed Troy's advice.  If you want a cartdtridge with minimal recoil and a decent level of reliability to knock down the 500 meter rams, you might want to consider cartridges like the 6.5 mm Rem BR and its variants (6.5 TKS, 6.5 Viking). Next up the scale are the 6.5 mm IHMSA (Lapua is coming out with a similar cartridge called the 6.5 X 47 mm Lapua), 7mm IHMSA; then the .260 and 7mm-08 Rem.

There has been a lot of discussion about the latest iteration of the 7mm Rem BR in this website. It is also a good cartridge to consider, if you don't mind having to shell-out extra bucks for custom made dies.

I used the 7mm BR for a few years and went back to the good ol' 7mm-08 Rem, why I use for hunter class. In standard class I use the .260 Rem. Both these cartridges have withstood the test of time and are proven performers. They both work very well with Hodgdon's Varget and H4350.

I prefer keep things simple and to stick with reliable performers. Just my 2 cents worth.

CSCAL,

Since I spent most of the last two years shooting XTC and was monitoring HP Rifle forums, I actually asked Tubbs  - who participated in the forum - about the potential of the cartridge for HP silhouette.

Now, this about 2 years ago, and with the advent of 115 gr (and possibly larger) 6mm's, maybe he wouldn't say this now - but at that time he said he'd go with a .260 Remington as the XC was a little light for rams.

Dave - if you're monitoring this, let us know if you still feel this way!

A really interesting cartridge might be a 6.5 XC, giving us that badly needed bullet weight, and getting the bullet base out in front of the donut.
This would be a good fit for the short action 700's.

I've often thought about this, as it would be similar to a 6.5 IHMSA.
I don't know anyone that shot one of these but do know a two pretty good competitors that shot the 7 IHMSA with pretty good results - although both complained about getting - or having to jack around with - brass.
