Help with peep sight for 1894S......
« on: October 12, 2005, 09:17:20 AM »
Hi everybody!
It's been quite a while since I roamed the chatrooms here, had some health issues, but......I'M BACK!
I need help locating a rear peep sight for an 1894S marlin 44mag. I'm looking for the one tha attaches to the top of the receiver via the factory scope base holes. I believe there are a couple of variations out there, one of which i think was a factory accessory many moons ago. any help would be greatly appreciated.

I believe the sight you're looking for is the XO sight; I saw it on the Marlin store webpage; they're offering it as a kit with the front and rear.

It appears to be the same as the XS sight Montanan posted.

I'll try and post the address but it's on www.marlinfirearms.com then select store then accessories and it's about 2/3 down the page.

I got one from my local 'smith; Ijust bought the rear sight and added a higher brass bead.  it works OK but I like my Williams side-mounted one much better it's the WGRS I think.

Thanks for the help fella's.

I had already checked those out but I appreciate the input.  Wonder how well that "one ragged hole" deal works being that far forward.

It seems as though somewhere in my (feeble) memory I peeked through a rear peep on an 1894 that had the adjustments on it and interchangeable aperatures. It may have been a custom setup but I didnt think so at the time.

I've also been pondering a tang setup......any thoughts.

Williams WGRS. Works great on my 1894C. Smaller than a Ghost Ring, doesn't hang over the side of the receiver.

Check out Midway if you don't mind a back order

I think this month Midway was offering the Williams WGRS for the Marlins. When I went to their website they were sold out.  So last night I ordered the Williams Foolproof - of which I have 3 or 4 on various rifles - not all Marlins.  I've really liked the FP on all the guns I've used them on.

I think the same Williams receiver sights will work on the 336, and most of the 1894 series (mine's the new 41 mag).  The difference may be more in which front sight will be appropriate given barrel length, caliber etc.

I'm going to try a Brownell's (Marbles?) Sourdough front sight but I have my eye on an XS white line front too.  I looked at a couple rifles with the XS front site and they were nice.

PS I think you can get the XS rear sight cheaper at Brownells or Midway than what Marlin is charging.

You may be thinking of the Williams -336 series (5D basic, or FP with micrometer adj.) I just put a 5D-336 on my 1895. I think the scope base holes are the same, so it should fit an 1894 as well.  According to the Williams catalogue:

5D-336: For Marlin Centerfire Lever actions (uses two rear scope mount
holes) 1894 requires hammer extension.

If in doubt, give Williams a call (1-800-530-9028)

The WGRS is good, but you have to remove the aperture to get access to the screw to adjust elevation.

I have not used the XS sights but everything I have heard has been very favourable. I have made up my own "white line" front sights in XS style, using a very thin strip of white Scotchlite reflective tape on the front of the blade and find they stand out really well.
