.30 cal varmint loads?
« on: December 13, 2005, 10:07:20 AM »
I have more .30 caliber rifles than I know what to do with in .308, '06, and 30-30.  I primarily hunt whitetails and elk.  I have been thinking of getting a predator rifle in .223, 22-250 or the like, however, I always read about the versatility of the .30's because you can get bullets from 110 gr. to 220 gr.  If I could put together some accurate loads for the .30's with lighter bullets at higher velocity, etc. I'd like to give that a try first. I don't use my deer rifles enough anyway and with the variable scopes I think they should be good for varmints if the right loads can be found.  I don't hear to much about the lighter bullet weight loads for the .30's.
Would appreciate any experience to share regarding using lighter bullets in the .30's.  Thanks!

Don't have any loads handy but back when I was a teenager I used to use the old Hornady 110 gr. soft point in my .30 caliber rifles.  Accuracy wasn't the greatest but good enough for knocking off Jack Rabbits with some consistency.  Forget saving pelts from Coyotes and such though.  They would leave an exit wound a seamstress couldn't patch up.  Lawdog

I've loaded both 110 & 130 gr hps in a 308 and a 300winmag. They will make jelly out of a groundhog. If you're shooting coyotes for the hides find another gun! The 125gr Noslers are quite interesting also. I'd not think twice about using the bullets that I hunt with either. Your rifle is already sighted in for them.
