How hard are these barrels to find and what do they usually run?
Does anyone have any experience with them? Thanks fellas.

Flatlander,
     I too was interested in getting a 357Bain and Davis until I found out that 158 gr and 160 grain were the heaviest bullet they will take.  I am sure thay do great with the 158gr bullets but with that case it seams you could use a heavier bullet.  Now it has been some time ago when I was interested so things may have changed.  This is just a message to start you thinking.  If SSK or another barrel maker did your barrel they may be able to make the barrel to accept a heavier bullet.

Just a thought here, Im not a ballistics pro but, wouldnt a JSP at those weights and velocities be sufficient for deer? Only makes sense that if a .357 mag can bring a deer down that the .357/44 B&D should do ok on them too.

You are right Flatlander about  the Bain and Davis  being good for deer.  I had a book some time ago and this book bragged about it being a fine deer round.  The loading manual for T/C gives the 357 Bain and Davis a muzzle velocity for the 158 gr. bullet at 2100 FPS.  The same manual gives the 357 Max a muzzle velocity of 2050 for the same bullet.   When using  the 44 Mag case it seems that a higher Muzzle velocity for the 158 gr. bullet should be possible or it should be able to shoot a heavier bullet.  The manual also states that the forming of the case is very easy and no trimming is needed.  Thats pretty cool

I think Im just gonna have to find one and play around with it. I have a couple .44 mag barrels (tryin to trade one off, dont need two) so when I get to shootin and reloadin Ill have plenty of brass to experiment with. God I love this Contender sickness....so many barrels so little time. :D

If you have a spare(?) .357 barrel, why not take it up a notch. I think that Reeder does a rebore in what belive think he calls a .356(?), which is a 445 case necked to a .357. You should be able to down load it to standard .357 mag or up load to some heavy hitters. Maby use a 455 carbide sizing die for full linght sizing and used B&D dies for the neck sizing and seating.

ITS THE FANCY CUSTOM DIES THAT WILL GET YOU!!!  Rechambers are usually about $75.00 or so..but then they lower the boom on you with the dies!!!

I bought one last year from a guy on t/c list.It was a rechamber 357 mag barrel 10".I still have not got it to shoot worth a damn. :x

With some legg work (phone and internet) and lots and lots of luck they can be found. An outlet in Kittery ME last summer had two sets in their big summer sale for $50. Almost got one but I was already holding three times more then I had budgetted. Bought the wife lots of lobster and chocolat to ease the beating. I think it helped, did'nt get too many bruses. Try posting notes on every hunting message board out there for bout the barrel and/or dies and you may get lucky.

In looking at several sites and I came up with prices from $120 to $135 for B&D dies. A couple sites indicated that they have "other than listed" dies in stock but I havent gotten any replies yet as to wether they have B&D and what the price is.

I went back to the Gary Reeder info and he will rechamber to a GNR caliber for $50 and has (?) Redding custom dies for $90$. That would make it $140 for rechambering a barrel you already have and dies. Seems it would be a bit less than getting a B&D barrel and custom dies unless you get real lucky.

I didn't remember the Reeder calibers correctly in my first reply. The 356GNR is based on the 41mag and the 358GNR is based on the 445. Ive got a 41 Super 14 that is going out to be rechambered in his 41 GNR #2. Wildcatting...the only fun way to go.

Hornaday has the dies and shellholder for $73.00 shipped.  I just bought a barrel from RONF on this sight so far it seems to like remington cases, CCI 350 primers 24.0 grains of Winchester 296 with 158 grain Hornady XTP's about 3/4 inches at 50 yards.

Glad the barrel is working for you RabbitDog.  I believe I remember that Hornady dies can be had from Graf's for a bit less.  I think it would be around $60 shipped, but you'd have to buy a 44 Mag shellholder if you don't already have one.

I put a 2.5 x 7 T/C Recoil Proof scope on it and tried a load recommended by a fellow at the gun club, worked well.  But not being able to leave well enough alone I'll have to try other loads, and bullet wieghts.
