Webley Tomahawk/Pellet weights
« on: October 20, 2005, 04:37:08 PM »
Hi-I have the Tomahawk in .177 calibre (export version at 17.5ftlb muzzle energy) and have been asking what weight pellet would be recommended.  The answers are confusing to say the least. Some say an intermediate weight (8.3-9 grain) others say a heavier pellet ie 10 grain and over. It was pointed out to me that the heaviest pellet Webley themselves sell is the Lazadome at 9 grain.  What's the concensus from Tommie owners or owners of magnum springer?
Regards Gordon.

Gordon,

I wouldn't use a pellet any lighter than 8.5 gr. or damage to your rifle could happen.  It has been known to happen and has happened.  Go to Pyramyd Air at http://www.pyramydair.com/cgi-bin/show_necessities.pl?show=NEW&Caliber=0.177&Type=0 and check out the line of .177 pellets they have to offer.  Lawdog

Hi Lawdog- thanks for the info, unfortunately here in NZ there is nobody I know who stocks these pellets. we would have to import from the States or Aus. I currently use the H&N F&T Trophy(quoted as 8.64 grain) in the HW95 which are very accurate.  I tried the Baracuda Match in the Tommie and they were tight as a ducks a**e in the bore and not very accurate. I changed to the F&T Trophy and achieved excellent accuracy. If I can find someone who stocks the Beeman F&T Specials (9.2 grain) I will give them a try.
Regards Gordon

Shoot the one that groups the tightest.

My Tommy is a .22, and while it can handle the heaviest of pellets, the gun shoots most accurately with JSB Exacts.  I can get more power out of some heavier pellets and flatter trajectories out of some lighter pellets.  But IMO none of that is as important as using the pellet that groups the tightest.  I would recommend shooting whatever the gun likes regardless of the weight, provided you don't encounter piston slam.
