Turn a BC into a Maynard or Sharps Hankins?
« on: October 30, 2005, 05:27:00 AM »
Wondering out loud here so please bare with me.  Would it be possible to modify a BC, by placing a lever under action and running the lever up into the receiver that would activate the barrel release.  Of course the thumb activated release would have to be removed.

Thus giving the rifle a more Maynard or Sharps Hankins appearance.

Please let me know your thoughts.

Sounds like a lot of work..but..if that's what you want to do...and have access to a good machine shop...what the heck...go for it... :agree: ...If you are wanting it done by a builder...it would probably cost a pretty penny to have it fabricated though...

Yep, Mac, I'm thinkin your right it aint a gonna be cheap.  But the only Maynard Replica out there is $2000.00 pluss.  I will have to check with the local gunsmith. Cost aside do think it would worth the time?

My honest opinion...is it worth the time and effort?... Sure...having a unique Handi is always fun...provided you don't overtax your budget...and if you want it...and can afford it...that's all that really matters anyhow...Would I do it...probably not..namely because what would be involved with it...but most folks wouldn't spend what Quickdtoo and I did on rechambering and reboring our Handi's either or all the time and aggravation Fed M did on his custom one  Such is the way of it...you have to find out if it's feasible first...then factor in the total  cost...You might find a serviceable action your looking for or a imported one cheaper than what it would cost to re-engineer the H&R's action..then again you might not...

At present the latch operates as rack and pinion with the driving part (rack)at the top. A lever system would have to work inverted with the pinion on the bottom.

The geometry of the lever would have to be such to operate between  the trigger pin and the latch pin and shaped to allow your finger to go through the trigger guard.

Also the latch only moves about 1/8" to lock the barrel, the lever  would need travel at least four times as much between the pins. But the lever could be notched to make up for extra travel.

A very precise drawing would be the first step to check on the feasibility.

The conversion  would entail a complete new latch, a slot milled along side the trigger guard, a lever with some sort of retaining lock. The action cut outs for the existing thumb button should be fillet in. Perhaps it could be done by a guy with some moxy.

But he did the painting anyway on the ceiling.

That's my way of thinkin and the reason I have a .338-06 Ultra, .405 Winchester Target and a 45-120 BC.....but they didn't cost as much as what you're looking at.
