45-70 OR 30-30 IN A CARBINE?
« on: September 01, 2005, 02:31:09 PM »
I HUNT DEER AND HOGS IN FLORIDA. I HAVE A CONTENDER CARBINE THAT I LIKE QUITE A BIT. I RELOAD MY OWM AMMO. I'M LOOKING AT BOTH 45-70 AND 30-30 BARRELS. WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK?
IS THERE AN ADVANTAGE TO ONE OR THE OTHER?
 THANK YOU.

I agree! But don't rule out the 444 and 450. Also fine rounds!

I can see the power for hogs, but you don't need buffalo guns for those midget Florida wihtetails.

How bout a compromise?  A carbine in .44 mag.  With hard cast bullets it will flatten any hog.  With jacketed hollowpoints it will smoke any deer.  Another option is .357 maximum

He has a Contender, the 450 is not meant for the contender. And the only available 444 Marlin barrel is a modified one from a 44 Mag.

I had a 24" 45/70 barrel cut down to 18" and put a set of williams peep sites on it.  Talk about a great compact little package.

Hate to be the wuss here, but you might want to shoot someone elses 45-70 carbine first...I had a super 16 with rynite stock and a 2.5 scope on it and it kicked horribly!  Now I shoot a 14 inch 444 marlin without a break, but the stock and weight of the 45-70 carbine just hurt too much.  Rather shoot my 338 mag all day long than that bad bear.

The recoil in a encore with the Katahin .45-70 is a pleasure to shoot, even with 500 grain hot loads, and I don't have any fancy recoil pad just
factory synthetic stocks , i thought it too would kick like a Tennessee mule but did not I have settled on 405 grain lee hollow point hand cast bullets followed by a heathy dose of rx7 this load seems to give me good accuracy and punch.  kjg

If recoil is a problem, install a mercury recoil suppressor. I have on in my Encore chambered for the 416 Rigby and it kick a lot more than the 45-70. But not with the mercury recoil suppressor.  :D

I had a katidin barrel with a simms recoil pad recoil was mild but i didnt like the way it shot so i bought a custom shop 24" bull barrel and i love it recoil is mild and shoots much better at longer range.

I put together a cintender carbine in 30-30, sighted with a Millet SP1 red dot and can't imagine a better gun for what you need. Light recoil, serius accureacy and bullets usable for varmints to black bears are easily available. If you hunt from tree stands light recoil is a real asset. I also have a Marlin 45-70 that is not bad with mild loads but things get tougher from there.

I have both a 21" 30-30 and a 22" 45-70 barrels for my s/s T/C Contender carbine. I found for my needs the 45-70 is excellent for it's purpose but the 30-30 was lacking in reach.

So I sent the barrel to M i k  e  B  e  l  l  m and had him convert it to his wildcat 308B e l l m  wildcat cartridge. Which gives me 2650fps with a 150gr bullet.

I need both of these barrels so....

I have to say get both......... :)
