I bought a 338 JDJ #2. Haven't had a chance to try it out  yet but from the ballistics I'm getting it should be up to the task out to 200 yards.

Have you looked at a 378GNR caliber from Gary Reeder in flagstaff?

I think a 300 Win Mag would be cool.  :D

Can ya get a 7mm Mag in Encore 15"?  Even if ya had one made, would that be too much to hang on to?

What about a 30-06 with 15" barrel
« Reply #6 on: October 29, 2005, 04:26:40 AM »
Any of you guys been around an 06 with a 15" barrel.  I know the 7MM or the 300 Mag would do the trick, just wondering about the 30-06?

I had a 30-06 15 inch Encore pistol barrel and took a deer with it. I am sure it would work on an Elk with the proper bullet.  :D

No  muzzle brake, I did not feel it needed one for the pistol.  :D

I think the 7-08  or 308 would be a good choice. I have not shot the 300 win mag or the 30-06in a pistol, but do not believe you can burn enough powder in a 15" barrel to take advantage of the extra capacity of the large calibers.  I have killed one elk with the 308 (rifle) and it worked fine. Bullet selection and shot placement are the key. My next barrel will be a 7-08 and I hope it will shoot the 140 Fail Safe or the Barnes bullets. It will be intended for elk.

For a pistol barrel I don't see much advantage in a 300 win or 30-06 over the 308. My Elk rifle is a Encore in 300 win mag but the pistol barrel I have and thinking of using for Elk is a 308. Looking at Horandy 165gr SSTs or Barnes X in 140 gr.

I tend to favor cartridges that are efficient in the shorter barrels (max of 15 inches). Thus, I like stuff based on the .308 Winchester case, .284 Winchester case, .348 Winchester case, .350Remington case, etc. I haven't tried all the WSM and WSSM ultra high pressure rounds.

That said, I like the .307 and .356 Winchesters because I like a rim. I also like my .411/.348 Winchester  and the .41Whammy.  8)
