Shot my .444 Contender today....
« on: March 05, 2003, 01:37:06 PM »
Well I loaded up some round's and went up in the hill's today.I got rained out :(  but,I did get to shoot a box of ammo :) MAN THIS THING IS FUN!
the load was 50gr of IMR4064 with a 240gr XTP.It didn't burn all the powder but, groups ran about 1" to 1.5".Primers look good and the empty brass just falls out when you open the chamber and point the barrel up in the air. What powder would be better and give me a clean burn?

PJ - Haven't heard from you in a while. Did you abandon the 6.5 for something just a little larger? If you're not burning all the powder in those loads, do you think a tighter crimp, or a little less powder will work more efficiently for you? What distance were you getting the groups at? How many shots? Man I'm asking a lot of questions tonight!!  :-D

Sorry I forgot the details its a rechamber of an older Super-14 .44Mag.Recoil to me is not to bad its like a .358jdj maybe a little more :) All groups today were shot at 80yrs.I don't have a 6.5 but I do have a 6mmBR and won't get rid of that!I loaded some with and without a crimp it didn't make much if any diff.Maybe a faster powder?

PJ,

Try 30 gr. of H4227 with a 240 for a plinking load. RL-7 and AA2015 are good powders for 240 and 265gr bullets and H322 for the 300 gr. thumpers.
