15" 209x50 drew blood today
« on: October 29, 2005, 04:24:51 PM »
To day is the last day of Maryland's special early deer season doe only.
I went in the woods this afternoon about 2:00 pm and at about 4:45 I saw a little 3 Pt buck come walking to my stand, he didn't know I was in the tree but he did figure out something was not quite right and turned

around and went back the way he came. This was the only deer I saw today from my stand at about 6:15 I got out of my stand and went up the hill to the field that I walk along to get to my stand, This Field was full of corn a 1 week ago and is not harvested. When I go to the edge of the field I stood just in side the woods looking and watching, then  a buddy of mine called me on my nextel   and I heard something run back in the woods.

At that I started walking along the field at the wood line I look up and see a doe staining in the field about 40 yards from me giving me a great shot and looking right at me, a very quick look around and saw it was safe, I raised the 15' 209x50 and did a quick look trough the scope to double check it was a doe, when I knew for sure it was legal to shoot I moved the cross hairs to just behind the front legs and I took the shot. at the sound of the cannon :-D  going off and echoing trough the farm the doe ran off I was able to watch her run when she got to something like 100 yards so just fell over and didn't move. I got to her and found she was small about 50-60 pounds.

Now mind you this was a shot out to 40 yards with a 15" encore and It was totally off hand from a standing position, I was out in the open and didn't have any thing to use as a rest or even hide behind.

The load I used was: 90 grs of goex  black powder a lightfield Alpha gold 300 sabot bullet that I got to try for free from North American hunting club and winchester 209 primers. The bullet struck just where I wanted it to but did not exit! The entrance hole was as big as my first finger, the bullet went trough the heart and was big enough to get 3 fingers in but no exit, I will check tomorrow and see if I can find the bullet under the skin.

I gotta get me one a dem!  The 15" 209X50 is on my "gotta own" barrels list for the encore.  Good job!  How's the recoil?

It is not real bad I would say it is about a heavy 44 mag or 375 JDJ,
The muzzle flash is something and the muzzle blast if all it's own.
Even with my amplified hearing protection on I could still hear the ring trough the farm.

Quick question, Rickyp,

How do you do the quote thing like you did with the "Hows the recoil" in your last post?  Thanks

I have a TC Scout in .54 that would rock for BP handgun, but Wisconsin doesn't allow its use.  Maybe someday...

Congrats!

Have you ever run that rig across a chronograph?

I was curious about what kind of velocity you see.

We all know that Colt 45 cowboy loads with smokeless are similar in velocity to BP loads and either will kill a deer. Yet I'm always hearing people talking about how you can't hunt (effectively) with a BP pistol

I wouldn't use most cap and ball revolvers for serious hunting.  I have a Walker that sends a round ball at speeds similar to a .357 mag, but even then with a round ball it is loosing speed rapidly so it may be OK to 25-30 yards.  The scout is a .54 and can consume (supposedly) two 50 grain pellets under a major size slug (hurts my hand just thinking about it).  Even then I wouldn't take it out to shoot long shots.

If you think of an encore or contender M.L. handgun as being close  in power as  a heavy 44 mag or light 454 you will be fine.

Well, that's where I was going with my thinking. We all know either of those are just fine to 50 yards or so and many of us shoot our TC 44s and 454s within those limits most of the time. I know my ranges are under 50-75 yards 95% of the time even when I do have a rifle. That's how I became interested in hunting with a TC in the first place. So why would I need to fall back to a rifle for BP? I shouldn't need to!

From several years of experience of hunting with my black powder pistols, I will tell you you have to pay more attention to bullet selection, more so then normal handguns or rifles.

When I first started out I was using a 7.5" ruger old army with heavy loads and conicals I shot a few deer with mixed results all shots where under 30 yards, then I got a custom 209x50 CONTENDER barrel from bullberry and have taken a few deer with it. I have shot quite a few deer with hornady XTP 250 gr 45 caliber bullets, with less them good results. at the end of last deer season I found some good deals on barned 25 gr copper bullets $2.00 per pack so I bought all they had. I did not have a chance to shoot any deer with them,
This year I got and Encore and 209x50 barrel got it sighted in with the extra 250 XTP bullets.  and just before Maryland's early m.l. doe season I get a pack of Lightfield spritzer boat tail Alpha gold in 300 gr. This is what I used to take this doe. they worked well but I think they are a little to fragile.
