need HELP with slug reloading
« on: October 30, 2005, 11:07:26 AM »
Looking for info/help on reloading slugs for rifled barreled slug guns. This is my problem--- reloading the slugs with the info included in the supplies. All slugs are roll crimped as consistant as possible. Not all will roll crimp perfect( o.a.l) all within 2/1000ths of each other.I am using a drill press on slow speed. The problem is the inconsistant groups at the range. I will get two shots about 2  inches apart but the the 3rd shot is a foot high off to the left or right. Then the next shot is right in there then a flier. Both shot guns are getting the same inconsistancy a marlin bolt action and a H&R single shot. All shooting is done at 100 yards. All scopes and mounts are tight nothing is loose. If I'm going to hunt with these guns I need to correct this problem. Please help. Thanks

Haven't done it yet, so can't comment. This would be a good place to begin.

CT Kid,
If the slugs are cast weigh them to see if they might have voids in them. A light wt slug compared to the others would be suspect, and a void dosen't have to be large to throw off the shot.

An easier way to get good roll crimps is to shorten your cases untiil your only rolling over 1/4 to 5/16 of the mouth(measured from the mouth to the slug/sabot). It dosen't have to be deep like the factory crimps.  Just roll them to the top of the slug or sabot. Heating the mouth some before rolling helps also.

I dont know if this will work for you, but I cast a bunch of Lee key drive slugs, and I shoot them out of regular crimped shells.  I even drop them into winAA wads before I load them into the shells.    They are not as accurate as bought slugs, but they are consistant 4" groups at 50 yards.

How far off in inches is the flyers?
