A little help with sling studs please on a 336

Okay my question is this.... does the little white/black plug on the buttstock just remove to place the stud into the stock... or do I have to drill a new hole to put the stud in.

Just trying to get a sling on this for running around the woods with.

From Marlin's website FAQ's:

13. Q) What is the small round black and white dot on the bottom of my Marlin stock?

A) This is the Marlin "Bullseye". This trademark has been used since 1922 on all Marlin walnut buttstocks. Please note that this is not a suitable place to install a swivel for you firearm. Swivels should be mounted approximately 2 inches from the toe of the butt.

You need to drill a new hole.  The bullseye is for decoration.  I believe the hole should be 2" to 2 1/2" from the toe of the butt, though that's not cast in stone.  I strongly suggest that you fashion a jig, or use a drill press to get the hole perpendicular to the stock.  It is very easy to have it off enough to be noticable.
