I've heard that the HB version does 1/2" groups but what about the standard one with iron sights? I'm looking to buy a .223 single shot just for fun shooting and the occasinal varmint hunt. I'm willing to buy the HB but the standard has sights and is cheaper (while even the HB is cheaper than a Handi) so that intruiged me. I already own two NEF/H&Rs and just wanted a change in maker just for some $$ savings and i like the stock shape of the Rossi.

I would throw the extra dough for the HB version myself. The standard barreled Rossi's are too wispy for my taste, they seem a lot thinner than the Handis standard barrel to me. Besides you are eventually going to want to scope a .223 in order to get the most potential accuracy out of it.

I personally am just a fan of Bull Barrel/Heavy Barrel configurations. But the normal Rossi 223 with open sights, is tapped out for a scope rail and base. Both would be fun. Just depends on what you taste is I guess. I'd opt for the HB model myself.
Just remember that the Rossi 223 has the same rate of twist as the NEF/H&R 223-1:12 Meaning that most likely it will love the lighter bullets.

However the Bull Barrel version has a 1:10 twist. Not much differance but should accomendate a heavier bullet a little better

Hi i had a reg barrel 223 in the rossi. The gun will shoot a good group for the money. I used the Win 45gr JHP ammo varmint pack. I got a 3/4 inch group with the little gun. That was a 3 shot group. My dad wanted one of them so i let him have it and went to a Rem 700 223. But if i would have reloaded for it i think i could have gotten it to group better. I sold the Rem 700 and went to a Bushmaster rifle. But for the money that little rossi rifle will shoot. VM

no doubt but given i plan on target/hunting at some distance a bull barrel would likely be a wiser choice.

If i used it as a predator calling gun and had to carry it alot. I would go with the reg barrel one that is if you hunted all day. VM
