The .45/70 Buffalo Classic .... How thick and heavy is the b
« on: November 04, 2005, 06:01:25 PM »
How thick and heavy is the barrel?

I've thought about getting a Buff Classic barrel, but 32 inches is longer than I want, and 22 inches with the other .45/70's is shorter and lighter than I want.

Does the Buff Classic have enough thickness to install a rear peep sight on the barrel itself?  Or mount a base for mounting a scope?  Of course I'm probably contemplating modifying the BC barrel.  Several on this board have indicated the .45/70 does well with a low powered scope.

Thanks for your replies in advance.   8)

The BC barrel is the same as any Handi or Ultra barrel, just 10" longer. It comes with a Williams WGRS peep in complete rifle form, drilled and tapped for scope just like a Handi or Ultra. The acc barrel comes with no sights at all but is drilled and tapped for the scope base and is dovetailed for a standard 3/8" dovetail front sight. It does well with any scope, low powered or otherwise, and wear irons sights well, too!!

This is the best pic I have of the WGRS mounted, but on a 45-70 Handi...

Thanks Quicktdoo ......

And for the pics.

What length of barrel do you recommend for the .45/70?

I cannot imagine anything over 26" and if the BC barrel taper adds substantial weight to the overall SB-2, I can see that 22" might not be too short.  But I am determined to get maximum performance / efficiency from the round too.  I like the idea of heavier bullets too - 400 to 500 grains, even cast bullets.

As for a scope, I'd go with a Leupy VX-1 or VX-2 - the 1X4X shotgun scope, or 2X7X33mm.

What is it your wanting to do with a 45-70...

The Buffalo Classic's 32" barrel was done because of those that want to shoot "Long Range"  You won't find many 26" or 28" barreled Single Shot Rifles in a long range match.

I admit it's a bit rediculess since the Buffalo Classic is not allowed in most BPCR matches, I personally know of just a couple where its allowed because its not your standard BPCR/NRA match.

If you don't like the barrel length, when you get it have it cut and crowned by your own gunsmith.  The current 32" barrel does nothing to hurt the weight or add substantial weight simply because the 22" Handi-Rifle is only 7 pounds and the 32" Buffalo Classic is only 8 pounds.  Many of us added an extra 2.25 pounds of weight to it, to help with the felt recoil shooting long strings.

Check out Buffalo Classic First Web-Page created by me way back when they first came out.  The Buffalo Classic as is, is one awesome shooter and dang accurate as well.  Do a search here to find all the data you can.

Maybe the Buffalo Classic isn't really what you need for a 26" hunting 45-70 but maybe this is.

BTW - My Single Shot rifle weighs in at 11.5 pounds and sports a 32" barrel, but its not a Buffalo Classic either.

Have a good one  :D

I'd have to go with 26-28" as an idea barrel length for hunting after handling both my 26" .338-06 and the 28" 405 Winchester ar the range, so far.....

I've shot the 45-70 300gr nosler partition at a bit over 2400fps thru the 22" barrel, thru the 32" barrel it didn't gain much velocity, same load using H4198. Matt P developed a load using substantially more H4198 for 2500fps using the hornady 300gr bullet. I think to get the most out of the longer barrel, if that's your goal, a slower powder like H4895 needs to be used. I prefer to use the Hodgdon Extreme powders for our up and down temp variations here in Washington, for just a bit more confidence factor.

28" 405 Winchester built from a 38-55 Target
