Ordered my daughter her Ultra ight 223 tonight

Ordered my 9 yr old daughter her first centerfire Handi tonight. An ultralight 223. She wants to deer hunt with me. Her brother has a UL 243 but she doesnt like it and want one of her own. She is a straight A student and a prety decent kid so I guess she deserves it. I cant wait to take her.

  This will make Handi # 8 in our house.

Bks I think 223 is a good caliber for young child, Some here have had
 trouble getting good results with the light wights But I bought a
 SL3 while back, it shoot  45 grain ww box pretty good, but sent it  to
 a gunsmith to rebored and cambered to 25-35. Best luck to you
 and Daughter. Tell her I hope gets a deer this fall. Marv.

Hello BKS. I recently purchaced this same rifle. Mine shoots better than any other bolt or single shot rifle I have. I am shooting hornaday 55 grain soft point bullets. They are reloaded to 3200fps. I have a cheap loepers 3x9x40 rubber armored scope in this gun. On six power I shoot 3 shot groups that are a DIME in size. That almost covers the entire 3 shot group. A NICKLE completly covers the entire group. I dont know how that tranfers into inches but I would say my groups are a consistant 1/2 to 3/4 inches with no wandering of the zero. I LOVE THE GUN. I have shot two whitetails with the gun. One was a larger doe at 75 yards. It dropped in its tracks. I recovered the bullet and it weighed 29gr. I then shot a buck (large 10 point) at about 250 yards and the deer dropped in its tracks. I spined him. Or just below the spine and the shock to the spine dropped the deer. It was still very alive when I got to it and a second shot through the lungs put it away in a very short time. I recovered that bullet as well. It had only lost five grains of weight. It weighed 50gr and mushroomed very nicely. Two shots Two kills. I kept both bullets. This is a very low noise, very accurate, very easy to carry and hard hitting rifle and calibur.
I have read on this sight that ultralites are temprimental. I dont find that to be true. I think they shoot better because you dont have all that barrel weight hanging out there putting more stress on the lockup pin (dont know the correct name for it) but this is my theory only. One more thing is that my gun seems to be very very tight. I have to use both hands to open the rifle to load it. It wont drop open by its own weight. I think this very tight fit may enhance the accuracy of this rifle.  It also shoots 45gr hollowpoint winchester white box to under an inch but about 2 inches higher than the 55gr. It also shoots 60gr berger bullets into dead center bullseye with about a 1 1/2 group for 5 straight shots. This is a DEAD SERIOUS LITTLE RIFLE. One last note. I can shoot 5 shots quickly with less heating than just one shot from the 243.

I also shot my step fathers 243 ultralite youth model last week. With remington factory 100gr ammo it shot 3 shot groups of 1 1/4 inches with no wandering of zero. It shot two shots in about 1/2 inch then the third shot always strung veritical about an inch on the third shot. I suspect the barrel had heated up by the third shot. I took no time to cool between shots. Now this is better performance than most handi rifles.
