My favorite day of the year!
« on: November 18, 2005, 06:57:27 PM »
The sun will be up in about 5 1/2 hours and it will be the first day of gun deer season in Alabama!  :music: My favorite holiday!!  :blaster: - YEEEEEHAW!! Is it just me or is it hard to choose just one rifle to take on the first morning of the season?? I narrowed it down to .270 A-BOLT and .30-30 Handi... hmmm... I think I'll go shoot one with the ol' .30-30 handi-rifle. Never killed anything with it so now would be a good time to break it in I think. Has anyone else had this problem?? Or am I crazy?

Wow, IIRC it is the last week of deer season up here in North Dakota. At least for rifle. I guess because it gets so cold we have to get it done early. :?

Know what you mean Muddy....I went with my 338-06 over my 270 or 25-06 Ultras..it was hard choosing which one to take...

Good Luck on your hunting...

Good luck to you Muddy its also opening day in NY's southern zone today but  due to a bad fall i hurt my knee and back and it will be the first season i miss in  33 years . Not only do i sometimes  find it a hard choice but i have gone out with the 06 in the mourning and switch to the 45/70 in the afternoon. But isn't it great having  a large selection to choose from . Again good luck to you and everyone else this year  and be safe. Tanoose

Thanks Ya'll! I got a big o' nanny deer this morning at about 7:15. I saw 2 durn beagles about 15 minutes before i saw her.(My neighbor's rabbit dogs) I got up and moved on the other side of the hill and she must have been right behind me. I didnt think I'd have any luck after i saw the dogs. I heard them an hour before I saw them. But it worked out I guess. I shot her after about 5 minutes of watching her stomp her hoof at me. She was about 30 yards away. I ended up taking my .270 handi. Put her in the dirt right on the spot. Thanks again!!

Oklahoma opened today for 16 days.. 8) .passed on a doe an a buck that was limping and had lost an antler, had my Handi 7-08, about a 70 yard shot, but passed, have 3 deer in freezer already from BP season. Was hoping to see buck that won  the fight! Going to use my 15" Encore 7-08 this pm, will pop the doe with it if I see her.....make it more sporting. :)

I plan to start with the 7X64 but I have the 30-40 Krag laying right beside it. I think I will go with the 30-40 afternoon and go in the brush. The AM hunting will be in more open country with longer shots...

Good deal Muddy :agree:
Yeah I am ready now, Monday starts rifle season in VA. I can't wait. I just got back from shooting the 30-06Comp, with some 180gr Winchester Silvertips and I say it did like them rather well,  3/4" for me at 120yards. With the crappy wet sandbags I was using I was happy with that.
