22wmr in a 22lr, can I do it?
« on: March 09, 2003, 04:56:56 AM »
Hi there,
Ive got an old model remington 512 sportmaster.
It shoots all 3 types of 22 ammo.
Im wondering since there is such a long clearence between bolt face
and chamber if it is possible to shoot 22magnums if I load it
single shot from the breech? or would I have to modify the chamber?
If I need to modify the chamber would I still be able to shoot 22Lr to
shorts after? I haven tried this yet, just wondering if it is safe?
thanks. Im a real noobie

Don't even think about it! All you would do is completely ruin a rifle and render it unworkable for anything other than a post or prop.

My neibour suggested it, so I thought I would ask.
Didnt know there were any diffeneces between LR and magnum
except cartridge length.
Thanks again!

The main problem even if you rechambered it (which no gunsmith would do anyway) is that the barrel is bored for 22LR which is under .224 which is what the 22 mags are. The guns like the ruger single six that have both 22lr and 22 mag cylinders can make it work because the barrel is bored .224 for the magnum and the maker is counting on the soft 22lr bullet to obtrude or expand in the barrel to work, and it does work reasonably well as the pressure bumps up the 22 bullet to fit the bore so it does work that way,  but if you went the other way and shot the 22 mag in a 22lr barrel you would be squeezing the bullet down the bore and raising pressures to a unsafe level plus I am sure accuracy would be way off anyway. So NO do not even try to do it as it is unsafe. Hope this explained it. Jim
