Is this abnornal for a .22 ?
« on: December 13, 2005, 01:37:20 PM »
Wife bought me a model 60 and cheap BSA 4x scope plus a 500 pack of plain jane federal shells.   I had one of the heavy bbl jobs with a clip, shot like a custom job but didn't like the clip at the carry point.
Anyway, shot the rifle today and after sighting in at 50 yds.  pput four of the little 1/2 target dots on a pieces of paper. Fired a tube full at one dot and it just disappeared, did the same with the next 3. Couldn't believe such accuracy ! (no fliers either) the rifle is as as out of the box. Sure looks plain jane but most squirrels around here are in trouble. :P

My Model 60 will do the same.  And that's with an old Weaver K-6 that I can't seem to get quite exactly in focus!

I do not have any 22LR at the moment with the exception of a pistol and my 22 mag does most of my 22 chores these days but I have always thought from the few times I have shot the Marlin Semi auto's they shot better than most Rugers and I have owned over 4 10/22's The 10/22 is a nice rifle but nothing exceptional as far as accuracy goes unless you doctor them up or get a exceptional one.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

I never had much luck in the accuracy dept with the Ruger 10/22 and that is why I'm so supprised with the Marlin. I sure wish I had got one of those grey/laminate stocks for the rifle. I would but factory replachments are cost prohibitive for me.

I would go back to the store where the gun was bought and buy all the ammo they have of the same lot number.  My observation has been that expensive .22's shoot all ammo well, but some better than others.  Cheaper guns show really strong preferences, and not just according to the cost of the ammunition.    I have shot a number of different brands at once and have found that an accurate lot from a cheap gun will outshoot one of my expensive rifles. though the average accuracy of the expensive gun i9s better overall. Another thing to try for maximum accuracy is to weigh individual cartridges and the seperate the ammution according to weight.  You have really lucked out in getting that kind of accuracy from the first ammo you tried.

The most accurate ammunition for me is the plain old CCI Blazer stuff.  It's the least expensive in my area, but shoots the best.

If I remember right, I've had five model 60's, mostly Glenfields. The only way I found to make them shoot badly was not to shoot them at all. I've never owned a Ruger 10/22 but have shot a good number of them. That convinced me I never want to own one and I'm a ruger fan!

Same here. I have owned several 60s from Marlin and Glenfield and all have been good shooters. The one I have now loves the Remy Golden Bullets in The 525 bulk pack. :D

There used to be more stuff for Marlin 60s.  I don't recall how the barrel attaches, but the 10/22 allows anyone with an allen wrench set to change the barrel and have the headspace right.  Different barrels allow a wide variety of options, so it became the darling of the do-it-yourself gunsmith. my guess is that the Marlin is pinned or threaded into the receiver.

:D Sounds like you found yourself a winner. I have owned who knows how many .22's over the years, and have found that the more you spend, doesn't mean you get more accuracy. Let's face it, you spend $200.00 on a nice gun and it shoots a half inch groupe at 50 yards, doesn't mean that you can spend $600.00 and shoot any better. I own a Norinco J15 bolt action .22lr rifle that cost me less than $100.00, and I would put it up against almost any other .22 I have owned. It is about as plain Jane as you could ever get, but man can that thing shoot! And, I'm not affraid to get it scratched. My dad told me that you can buy a VW, or you can buy a Cadilac. They will both get you where you want to go, but one just looks nicer.  Sometimes the same kinda goes with guns.

clean the heck out of it, moly coat it, shoot about 100 rounds through it again, the repeat the above process.  your groups will even shrink up further!
i do this to all my guns i think are pretty accurate, and i have a mod 60 with a tasco varmint 6x24 scope on it .  It will shoot 10 different brands of ammo under an inch at 100 yds. go to rimfire central, go to marlin string, look for a thread called mod 60 pics and stuff, you will see the light! oh heck with it, ill put some pics here.

these i shot all in about a 3 hr period, on a saturday at American shooting centers, in Houston. winds were steady 10 with 15mph gusts. no cleaning at all.  no time between shots, just grip it and rip it!  I had a good day.
