DANG IT!!!
« on: November 07, 2005, 07:32:36 AM »
I had to send my rifle back for accuracy problems, and while it was there i was going to get a couple of extra barrels,OK here's the problem.....they don't have any 7mm-08 barrels in  ....how close is a .270?I'm hunting deer and the fartherest shot would be about 250 yards, but i may want to hunt something bigger one day, should i get the .270 the 26-06 or just send it back after deer season to get what i REALLY want?I'm kinda disgusted,i've been waiting for a week and a half and now i've gotta pick something ELSE,
            thanks for any input

The .270 is one of the good ones, Jack O'Connor would agree with that, for sure!! The .270 may also be available in the muzzle braked UltraComp version, they had some left the last time someone checked. It's a .23" barrel, IIRC. The standard .270 is 22", then there's the 26" .25-06 and 26" .280 to choose from, also. The .270 UC barrels are about $135 shipped, IIRC.You won't go wrong with any of em for deer with the .270 and .280 shooting heavier bullets being a plus over the .25-06.

I was faced with pretty much the same questionearlier this year ( a stevens 200 though). I too wanted the 7-08 (I wanted a better deer gun than a 338 wm) but when I had the cash all that was available was a 270.  I bought it and the buck that I dropped with it on the weekend sure would not have known the difference.

I looked at it this way, for me my application is deer and a maybe elk gun (backup to the 338) and when you compare 7-08 to 270 you are looking at two absolutly right answers (there are a number of other right answers in the handi lineup too).

One thing to what out there is a trade off with muzzle brakes, the recoil is reduced (my 338 feels more like a 308) but be prepared for the noise.  All I can say is that it is an experience to feel the blast wash over you.

Over the standard factory loads...about 25-35%...start pushing the heavier 160 grain partitions...even more...the greatest advantage is the reduction in muzzle rise with it...you'll get a 50% reduction with that with the heavier loads...the only trade off is the noise factor when shooting in a enclosed space like some shooting ranges...or up next to a wall...and if in the prone position with the amount of dust it will kick up...I have had 2 of the 270 UC's...and my current one is shooting pretty darn good with the Fusion ammo ...

It's a keeper...but...if they don't have the 270 UC barrels...I would opt for the 280 barrel...it gives good accuracy and velocities...the 25-06 is ok for deer and pronghorns...but is lacking for bigger game such as elk and moose..and big bears...then again...you can always rechamber/rebore to a larger caliber as Quick and I did for those with the 25-06 barrel...

Here's my 270 UC...

If you might hunt something larger than deer some day you should really take a look at the .280 Remington.  It shoots flatter and faster than the 7mm-08 and packs more punch than any of the three you mentioned.  If you reload the selection of bullets is better than for the .270 and the .280 can be loaded to near 7mm Magnum performance levels.

Although compensated barrels do seem to reduce felt recoil, (I think that you think there is less recoil because the comp. reduces muzzle rise more than anything.)  they increase the noise level reaching your ears considerably. None of the calibers you are looking at including the .280 Rem produce what I would consider to be excessive recoil.  Unless you are very sensitive to recoil due to a shoulder injury, etc I don't believe any of these calibers would pound you too much.  I think my .280 Handi rifle kicks less than my 12 ga., Mossberg pump with heavy field loads.

I think you would be perfectly happy with either the 270 or the 280. A lot depends on which one I would choose if it were me making the decision. One would be if I handloaded or not and another would be if the extra inches of barrel were a plus or a minus to me. Everything being even, barrel length, bullet weight/design, and action type, they are practically ballistic twins. You're looking at .007" difference in bullet diameter .277" vs. .284", and the same parent case. I doubt a critter shot with either could tell the difference.
Edit: I forgot about recoil, I have the .280 Handi and a .270 Rem 700. Neither are what you call hard kickers in the felt recoil department. :D

Oops, too late   you've already ordered the .270 UC. Good choice, you'll probably love it so much you'll forget about the 7-08.

well,I just wanted something heavier than a .243 and i own a .308 so i was going to get something different.....i'll probably never get the 7mm-08 now,but i think i'll like my .270 just fine
Mac,thanks for the input on recoil,I've never shot a .270 before and wasn't sure what to expect
in fact, thank you all who responded :D

My brother has a 270 UltraComp and I have a 30-06UltraComp. These are great barrels, and reduce recoil a lot. But they are VERY loud
so like every one else said be warned. But in my book they are worth every penny, and a lot of fun to shoot. I think you will be very happy with it.

You all didn't leave much for me to add, but I will say that I always hunt/shoot with ear protection, so it doesn't make much difference with the compensated barrel, unless you are shooting from a prone position, then ya better have some eye protection for flying debris!! You loose a little hearing with every unprotected shot, once you loose that hearing, it's gone forever, no matter how small the loss was. :(

When at the range, I try to be courtious to the shooter next to me and let em know I'm shooting a comp barrel, they will get the bulk of the blast, much more than you the shooter gets! If I can, I shoot in stations with no one next to me if there are no baffled stations.

Quick what kind of hearing protection do you use, do you slip it on just before the shot or is it on all of the time.

I wear Sportears all the time when I'm hunting, they amplify but will cut out at anything over 85Db. They're real expensive now at over $600 a pair, got mine new on ebay for half that. Radians makes some in ear types that do the same, but I have no first hand knowledge of how well they work, but some shooters on RFC liked em.

I'm glad you through that in Tim. Hope I didn't imply shooting it with out  plugs in
I learned to use ear protection a long time ago. And with Comp barrels it a must.

If I were you at least pick up a pair of ear plugs. It would be better to have a little something than nothing at all, and you can buy them by the boxes, but I would just get a decent pair for what, like $5-10 or so at Walmart. It louder than a 7mmMag in my opinion.

Yeah thats one thing I don't like either. I don't leave them in during ny hunt, but try to plug when the time comes. I have a cheap pair that go around my neck that work pretty good. They are plastic and not spongey, so I can just push them in quickly. But there are times I admit that I know I won't be able to, like last years hunt shooting a small buck with my Finn M39 inside a blind...rung my head good! Try to never do that again :x

Yes and stood back a couple yards...all I can say is don't do it :biggun:
It hurts.
Ear protection is a very good thing especially with these barrel and one should always wear some sort. I won't fire a round off any centerfire rifle or shotgun now unless I have some. And neither should anyone.
Even cheap ones..something.
But don't let that scare you. Like I said these are excellent barrels and reduce recoil a lot, not to mention the accuracy they are capable of.
And heafty too.

When you're my age and your wife tells you your watch alarm on your wrist is going off and you can't hear it, you'll regret that decision. Lots of other things too, you can see a squirrel or small bird moving thru dry leaves, but can't hear it anymore and on and on......You can be somewhere that's dead quiet and all you can hear is a roaring, ringing sound in your ears, kinda like standing near a big waterfall. Protect what you have while you have it, it's the only smart thing to do.

Tim:

You don't have to be your age to not be able to hear a wrist watch alarm going off...that's exactly the way my ears are...and have been since being in the Navy and having all types of jets take off on the flight deck next to me...even with mikey mouse ears...the damage was done...Those F-4's and A-111's are really loud when the turn up the afterburners against the JBD's just before take off...

Yup, mine have been that way for about 10yrs now, just too many unprotected gun shots, for the most part. Even the miniscule 22Lr at 134Db will cause hearing loss, so it doesn't take as much noise as some shooters think.
