Veterans Day
« on: November 11, 2005, 09:32:45 AM »
Most of my customers with kids were upset today because they had to balance their schedules, because there was no school. "I'm stuck with these kids" !
I had a little fun with a quiz...
Why 11/11?
What is Armistice?
What was the war to end all wars?
After what war was Armistice Day / Veterans Day started?
I got mostly blank stares! Almost all told me that I knew this stuff only because I was a Vet. I corrected them!
I learned all this stuff in elementary school!!!

Me too. I sware they don't teach the kids squat about history any more and when they do it's often times incorrect or been 'Politically Corrected.

tscott,
Thank you for serving our country. God bless you. God bless all the men and women serving now and all those who have served our country in the past. May God continue to bless the United States of America. :agree:

1100/11th  day/11th month 1919 was the the sighning of the Armistice--my father was there. In 1921 -or there about the Unknown Soldier was buried with ceremony and Armistice day was established and changed in the late 40's to Memorial day for all Vets.Today we put 76 Flags out on the Yo Semite Hwy 120 Corridor and in the Cemetery and then a 1100 Ceremony in the Park,we take the flags down at 1600 and at 1800 we have Ceremonial Burning of flags that have been turned in old and tattered.

8) You can thank Dr. Spock, the ACLU, LULAC, NAACP and several other commie influenced groups for what is being taught in schools today.

When I went to school the teacher taught the three Rs, if you didn't pay attention, she spanked your butt with a paddle that looked like the one grandpa had in his old boat.  Only difference, her's had holes drilled in it.  You were taught to respect adults, say yes mama, no mama, yes sir, no sir, thank you and please.  Failure to do so would get your but busted.

The kids today are much smarter that most of us at the same age.  TV has given them exposure to things we only dreamed of, and the computer has given them unlimited access to anything they want to know.

What is missing, and no longer taught is respect of others, respect for property, pride in one's self and the age old requirement that one must work for what they want.

Things would be much better if parents backed the teacher up and allowed them to do their job without fear of a visit, or law suit instigated by one of the above mentioned agencys.

One Problem
« Reply #5 on: November 11, 2005, 02:28:43 PM »
One problem with teaching history is that tomorrow, there is always new history to teach.  The subject matter grows everyday.  Something either has to be dropped, less emphasis or more time allowed for the new stuff.

Kind of like having a one ton manure wagon and herd increases everyday.  Something has to go.

There is history worth teaching and then there is fluff.  The events that TScott mentions in his post all are or pertain to life changing events in US history.
