marlin 795 synthetic stock

one of the complaints about the marlin 795 is the ''hollow'' sounding synthetic stock-I' m wondering if anybody has tried filling it with dense foam-then to customize it a bit-try painting it with Krylon spray paint-trying for a camo pattern using a several colors and pine or cedar branches for the pattern.Its a cheap rifle-but according to report-shoots pretty accurately-some say better than the  ruger

I think that your idea is worthy of consideration. The Savage model 93 is kind of hollow sounding also. My son-in-law owns one of these in an Hmr. We could not understand why this rifle came with a front sling swivel but none in the rear We went ahead and drilled a small pilot hole in the bottom of the rear stock at the appropriate place and installed a self-tapping sling mount which appears to be holding up well.
We figured that if it would start to loosen up or crack, that a touch of bondo and some sanding & paint would make it good as new.

Wish we would have thought about some filler material. This could still be done via that pilot hole we drilled. What are your recommendations for a filler? Do you think that the highly expansive GreatStuff that is sold by most hardware outlets for the purpose of window & door insulation would do the trick?

P.S. I would not use that GreatStuff for your windows. It expands so much that warpage is not uncommon which will prevent easy opening & closing. It is really quite dense though and may be ok if contained within someting like a synthetic stock.

foam comes in a variety of densities-some having the capability of holding scews,and I would use that one.The thing to be extremely careful of is not using too much-that stuff expands and could easily blow the stock apart.I think it would certainly address the issue of the hollow sound though-while adding minimal  weight

   Just a hint;

   When i do any Great stuff around windows or any other place for that matter, I keep my reciprocating saw or at least one of it's blades handy.
   If the foam gets to crowding the window frame a bit too much, you can slice onto the foam with the saw or even with the blade alone and
   quickly relieve the pressure. The kerf of the saw closes up and you don't lose any insulating value either..

I just used my 795 SS this past Saturday. The stock really isn’t too noisy in the woods. But it is very light and accurate.
It’s a great 22 rifle for the winter. Light weight, stainless, good shooter and reliable. I think it weighs about 4 1/2 pounds.
Which for me is good because of all the other weight I carry on my back and pockets in the winter. I did get a 7 round magazine for it.
Because I found that the 10 round snagged more on my pack and gear when shouldering the rifle.

I have recently been contemplating my next .22 LR rifle. I am almost completely in to buying a 795..for coon hunting and all-round use. I considered the Savage 64F and the Mossberg Plinkster as well as others.
   I wanted light weight for tramping the woods & fields, plus magazine fed, so I can carry 3-4 clips full of varying ammo..depending upon the game.
  I already have a 10/22 and have owned a model 60 and a model 7000..which I gave one each to my grandsons.
     I especially liked the 7000, which is extremely accurate...and I really like the "hold open" after the last shot feature, which will come in very handy for coon hunting..
  I rather passed upon the Mossy, even though I read good things about them; just not sure how long Mossberg will stay with them.
   The Savage was a real challenge though..accuracy that rivals the Marlin..don't know if it has the "hold open" feature..and the fiber stock doesn't seem to fit as well as on the Marlin. I like the fiber stocks, since my guns are for hunting ..rather than show..

   OK Savage guys ..assault me; how do you like your 64s ?  Do they function well with a variety of ammo ? Do they have the "hold open" feature ?
