how is this done and how much should i expect to pay? the gun in question is a stainless .243 model 700.

i would also be interested in how much it would cost to have the barrel and action powder coated or teflon coated.

ps...if you can do it resonably, i wouldnt mind sending it to you instead of paying my local good ol' boy.

It's done by changing out the barrel. If you go with a top quality barrel I'll usually charge around $550 complete. ($300 for barrel, $250 labor). If you find a factory takeoff .260 barrel it's about $200 for labor only. You'll find a wide range of prices around the country, and a wide range of quality of work. Most of the barrel makers (Shilen, Pac Nor, ER Shaw, Douglas, etc) offer rebarrel services, and any gunsmith worth the title can do it. As for the teflon finish, I've been using that Brownells bake on teflon recently with good results. There are lots more out there such as Robar NP-3 and Lauer Duracoat as well.

i guess i was thinking you could rebore the barrel and not have to change it out.

is this not possible?

It is possible to rebore the barrel but usually rebarreling is about the same price.  Relative to the region of course.. There is no one locally that rebores barrels but prices for rebarreling range from $100 to $500 and installation for a normal installatioin(no action work) $50 to $200. Shilen and Douglas SS barrels run around $225 - $275 contoured. Istallation is extra.. There are also barrels designed to replace the remington profile. They greatly ease installation and are produced by most makers.. Check Brownells online catalog as well as Midway... both have extensive lines of barrels..
