The New Redfield Scope Company- Scopes???
« on: November 08, 2005, 11:03:10 AM »
A quick question?

Anybody seen or tested any of these scopes? I see the Widefield is back out... Had a 4x on my first real rifle, a savage .270... Man I loved that thing... Just wondering How the quality is these days... They've been up> Down>up> and back down again...

But how are they now???

I handled one of them a while back.  They look a bit different the Widefields that is.  The only thing I can say about them is, " STICKER SHOCK!"   They are way overpriced from what I can tell. The Widefiled was marked $465.  The old models are around $100 from the Sportsman Guide. $400 can buy you a Bushnell Elite or a Leupold, Burris that is well proven.  I think all the Meade stuff sells for more now because of some redesigns, Simmons and Redfield.  I just can't understand why anyone would want to spend that kind of dough on a scope that is unproven.  My .002 :D

I was actually looking at the 4x scope @ sportsmansguide for like $69... The photo shows the new RED R logo...

Was thinking it would be good for a woods rifle... I loved the way I could pick up game in my old one... I wish I still that one... It was a great scope...

There have been so many changes in the way scopes are made today versus the way they were made 20-30 years ago that there can be little to no comparison.  In today's global market, most scopes are made overseas to a "price point".  The marketer (like Redfield, Simmons, etc.) gets bids on a specific scope model with specifications and cost, and takes the lowest overseas bidder (usually).  This overseas builder then makes the scope to the marketer's specs.  A "Widefield" made today will have little resemblance to one made in 1980.  It may be better, it may be not so good.  Like their website says, the current scopes are just "inspired by the legendary Redfield brand".  In this global market, you usually really do get what you pay for.

BTW, this is fact with many products we buy.  Walmart is notorious for beating down it's vendors on price, forcing many to go overseas (China usually) to meet the price demands of WallyWorld.  If you don't meet their demands, you don't get shelf space.  If you don't get shelf space with the world's largest retailer, you will have a tough time being successful.  Often vendors will make "Wally-only" products of lower quality/cost  than their usual line, just to make Wally happy.  How else do you think that Wally can advertise "Rollbacks" all the time?  Do you really think that they cut their profits to give you the consumer a price break?   Wally isn't alone in this practice, but they are the biggest player.

Soo does that mean that the new WallMart Leuopolds are made in China?  Or are these less expensive scopes still American made?
Another question????  If there is a NEW Redfeild company.....will they handle repairs on older Redfeild Illuminator scopes?  Anybody have any contact info for them so I can ask?
....make it count

I cannot answer the first question, you'll have to ask Leupold.  There is a lot of rumor to this effect, but I sure don't know for certain.  They do say that their WindRiver products are imported.  A careful reading of their product descriptions seldom says 'made in America' anymore - instead it reads "built with legendary Leupold ruggedness".....

Redfield says that they assemble their current scopes in the US from US and overseas parts.   Their current line has no 'cheap' scopes in it, it is now the high-end line of Meade Instruments, competing directly with Leupold.   The 'cheap' Redfield scopes mentioned by another poster are old stock no longer in production.  Doubtless they were made overseas.

The old Redfield Illuminator, Golden 5-Star, Tracker and Widefield lines no longer exist.  These cheap scopes are now the relm of the "value" Meade product lines like Simmons and Weaver.
