.223 Handi Rifle Bullet Choices
« on: November 09, 2005, 09:28:35 AM »
I may be getting a Stainless-Synthetic NEF Handi Rifle tomorrow (if the deal goes through). The main purpose for this Rifle will be for Varmints & Coyotes, but would also like to be able to use it for Whitetails (for the Wife and Daughter to shoot). The Rifle in question is used, but had less than 50 rounds fired through it. The owner says the bore was polished with FLITZ Bore Polish prior to firing, and using Winchester / USA White Box 45gr. JHP's is printing sub 1" groups.

On to the question. Yes I know the .223 Remington NEF Handi Rifles have a 1 in 12" Rifling Twist. Has anyone had any experience with 64gr. Winchester Power Points in their .223 Remington NEF Handi Rifles and if so how did they shoot in the Handi Rifle?

I have a quantity of these bullets on hand, as I have loaded them in the past for use on Whitetails in a Ruger KM77RP MKII I used to have with good results. Accuracy with these bullets in the Ruger's 1 in 12" Twist Barrel wasn't the greatest, but most 5 shot 100 yard groups were around 1 1/2".

For sake of arguement I measured the length of some of the .224 Caliber Bullets I have on hand. The lenght of the bullets are

40gr. Nosler Ballistic Tip = .703"
50gr. Nosler Ballistic Tip = .788"
52gr. Speer Flat Base Hollow Point = .698"
64gr. Winchester Power Point = .798"
55gr. Nosler Ballistic Tip = .808"

As can be seen from the measurements I took the 64gr. Winchester Power Point is midway between the 50 & 55gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips in terms of bullet length.

Given these measurements I am inclined to think these bullets should work in this Rifling Twist. Your thoughts please, however I guess I will not know until I try them for sure. Just wondering if I need to be picking up some different bullets.

Thanks

Larry
