Remington Model 700 Muzzleloader????
« on: October 13, 2005, 03:03:17 PM »
I am interested in this muzzleloader, but can`t find it on the Remington site? Has it been discontinued? I would think it to be a pretty decent shooter? Thanks-Jack.

I believe it was discontinued. My good friend had 2 of them. He has since switched 2 of the Encore M/L's. He said he could nt be happier. He did say the Remingtons shot well, but cleaning was a real pain.  :D

Hi i have one with the 26 inch bar. And there was a company that came out with the 209 kit before Remington did . And it is the only way to go. I dont like the Remington factory 209 kit . I had a hard time finding the Rem core lokt. 275gr jhp bullets.  And a place in Wis. had 250 rds of them and i bought all they had. I had 2 Knights before i got my Rem 700 ML and i am glad i got the Rem. My dad and brother both as  a Rem 700 ML. With that bullet and 3 pellets i have killed deer 150yrds + with my Remington. Look on www.gunbroker.com and you can find one or e mail me i think i know a gun shop that has a new one. You can ajust the triggers on the ML's just like the rifle's. I think if you got one you would like it i have the Rem 700 50 cal SS 26 inch barrel one. good luck VM

my friend had a Remington ML 700 He just sold it. the thing was not he easyest thing to clean. never did shoot very well not real bad but not very  well. He just bought an encore 209x50 and is very happy with it.
The Encore is very easy to clean and if you do not shoot it is fast and easy to remove the breach plug to unload.

If you want a good M.L. look into Knights or T/C encore

I owned 2 Knight ML before i got the Remington. The Rem mite be a little harder to clean . But the way mine groups at a 100 yrds i happy with it. And i was talking to this guy he was sending his encore 50 cal ML barrel back for the secend time it was still shooting a 3 inch group at a 100 yrds. That was the best he could get it to shoot . He wasnt very happy with it for the money it cost. VM

Well, I love my Rem. 700 Ml. It is kind of a pain to clean but it shot very tight groups with the 300gr. Barnes MZ and the 300gr SST's. I used 120gr. of loose 777. It seemed the faster the load the tighter the group with mine. I have the after market 209 conversion as well. You do have to take the bolt apart and clean it! If not you are asking for trouble. It is kind of pain to clean the receiver as well.
I have an Encore now. I am consistently getting 1 1/2 three shot groups @ 100yds without cleaning between shots. If I were to clean between shots it may shoot as well as the Remington. I haven't shot it but 23 times and I'll still have some tweaking to do. The Encore with the 25 ACP. conversion is easier to clean.  If you do a thorough cleaning of the Encore and remove the breech plug and clean threads, it doesn't take that much longer to clean a 700 once you get used to it. I'm starting to love the Encore but I still haven't parted with the ol' Remington.
Good luck with your choice,
Stan

My friend and has dad has the Savage ML that use the smokeless powder they say that is the way to go. But i will keep using my Remington for a while. VM

I'm happy with mine. I like the 348gr Black Belts. The copper plated ones; not the naked lead. I'm shooting 120gr loads of Swiss FFg and it groups into a 3 inch bull at a hundred yards. This is more than enough for any Elk I come across. It's nice to carry and comfortable to shoot.

My Remington was extremely accurate. But the primers tended to fragment and blow pieces into the inside of the bolt. It was a bit difficult for me to reach the nipple tp prime or unprime the rifle with the scope in place too. Remington has the fastest lock time and one of the best trigger systems of any rifle made.

Good luck hunting!  >>>------------>

I wouldn`t be using a scope, so that would be ok at getting to the nipple. Jack.

I just bought a NIB 700ML...its my first smokepole! Its the blued version with black synthetic stock. They were originally retailing for around $500-$600 CDN, but I got this one for $250.00CDN as a dealer clearance.

For the price, I said what the heck! Now what goodies should I pick up for a trip to the range...and possibly the field?

you will need primers bullets and powder
then you will need a ram rod extension and a "T" handle is always nice
bullet starter. you can get a "T" handle bullet starter to save space.
some black powder cleaning solution ( some use rubbing alcohol) for cleaning on the range cleaning patches
If you will be using loose powder"
powder mesure
a black powder flask. never a good idea to keep a lb can of powder on the shooting bench
some kind of target

X-man,
Sounds like you got a deal. Someone with experience might save you some frustration and some money. Read the instructions and read post here for some good ideas. Here are some things that come to mind.

A priming tool of some sort to aid in priming would be helpful.

Also the ram rod extension and handle that comes with the rifle are cheap aluminum and break easy. Be easy with them. When they break we drill them and clean the threads (10-32) and insert a stainless stud made from a 10-32 screw. The stainless stud won't break.

A bolt disassembly tool is nice. You have to keep the bolt clean and lubed or it will rust up and cause a misfire.

Some kind of speed loaders to hold pre-measured loads come in handy while hunting or at the range. I have used medicine bottles to hold pre- measured charges when going to the range to speed things up.

A possibles bag or fanny pack to keep things in while hunting or at the range or a MTM box to store things in. Keep it together so you kind find it.

Good luck... I think you will enjoy,
Stan

Thanks for the replies guys! I figure I'll go with the pyrodex pellets rather than the loose stuff, although I've heard good things about the new 777 powder. Any Remington owners recommend primers for this rifle? Were the factory rifles set up to accept #209 Shotgun Primers or do I need to buy a conversion kit for this?

What about recommendations for bullets? I cast my own pistol/rifle bullets, so I'd basically only need to pick up a new mould. Can anyone recommend cost effective sabot type bullets for target practice and/or use in the field? Thanks again!

Depending on your rifle you may have to buy a conversion kit, actually even if your rifle comes with one I would recommend that you buy a conversion kit.  The Remington 209 nipple is very suspect in my book.  It is dirty and it is sometimes difficult to get the spent primer out.  I would highly suggest you purchase the conversion kit form Cabelas, it is made in Quebec, Canada and relly performs well.  It is a lot cleaner and the spent primers come out very easily.

209's - I have used the Remington 209-4's for years and have really been pleased with them.  I think they have been discontinued and Remington is now producing a Remington Kleen-Bore ML primer, but they are expensive.  I would probably switch to a regular Cheddite 209 again because of expense.  I have been using them for several years for trap loads and they have risen to the occasion.

You will have to check your state to see what is legal to shoot.  I have found my Remingtons will shoot just about anything accurately.  In Idaho we are able to use sabots - so that is what I have gravitated to.  I use or have shot several different sabot bullet combinations.  I will tell you that you need a thin sabot to get the bullets down the barrel.

I shoot the following:
Elk - 100 grains t7-2f - 300 grain .458 Nosler partition in a MMP .458 Orange sabot.
Deer - 100 grains t7-2f - 260 grain - .451 Nosler partition in a Nosler or MMP HPH-24 black sabot.
Target practice - just switch out the bullets for a compairable Hornady (expense).

I have heard some very things about the Speer Gold Dot 45 cal 300 grain HP bullet.  I have ordered some and plan to test them as soon as I can get my hands on them.  Want to try some Gold Dot 250"s also.

Gotta go class is starting

Good luck in your searches
Keep shooting muzzleloaders - they are a blast....

Hi Sabotloader i did the same thing . The one made in Can. works 10 times better than the one that came with it. I fount a store that had the Remington 275gr JHP bullet with sabot made by Remington.  I bought all the store had 250 rds of them . And i had over a 100 rds stuck back before i got them. I used 2 pyrodex pellets now going to move up to 3 before next season. I killed a small 5 point buck with it @ a 150yrds back in the end of Oct.  I have a Nikon 3x9x40mm scope on it. VM
