I killed a coyote with my contender 30/30AI 15" TC customs shop barrel @ 165 yds. I didn't have alot of time to think about the shot .... the yote crossed my food plot while I was deer hunting and I called it back in with 5 bleats from a can deer call....that is the second dog I have called back with it.... when it popped back into my shooting lane I popped him and he left out pushing his front end. After the shot I started thinking that it was an awful long ways to shoot as fast as I did. He ran about 30 yards and piled up. I was shooting 150 gr hornady ssts and I hit him behind the right front shoulder and blew his left shoulder almost off. I cannot wait to get a deer in my sights now.

I shot a coyote at about 100yds with my 14" 223 while I was deer hunting and the 63 gr Sr dropped him where he stood. I bet those coyotes hate to see deer season come along each year.

Taking a coyote at that distance is no easy task from from a handgun. Always a little more wiggle in my hunting position than in my bag rested bench position. A goood trigger like on the TC is a big help. What scope were you using and at what power? Sounds like a perfect shot (I assume you were aiming for that shot location)! Don't tell anyone that you were really aiming for the head. Ha Ha

Certainly a confidence builder for the upcoming deer. Let us know how the deer hunting goes and where we can come by to get the sausage. Good luck!!!

It sure built my confidence. I was using a Bushnell Tropy 2x6 set at 4 power. I just aimed at his front end and let fly. He left out of there pushing his front end.... the way my luck is going this year I had does all over me the first part of the season and told myself that I had to shoot a buck before I shot a doe.... I killed a seven point with my encore rifle in 257 roberts. now that I am pistol hunting only....the nearest doe has been 250 yards away...have passed on 2 small 6 points...don't want to tag out this early... Gotta shoot a couple of hogs to get some sausage .... we are gonna fire the dogs up just soon as deer season is over... can't wait.

Thanks for the info. I like a variable power scope on my handguns that are capable of shots beyond 125 yds. I generally hunt from stands where rest are and option and will up the power to get a point to shoot for. They also help at the range to be able to see bullets holes in the target.

You can make deer sausage, but I guess we will wait for the hogs.

I'm just curious, were you hunting deer with a 223???
Or did you just "happen" to have it in the stand with you. I know a lot of folks (including myself) who'd say that a 223 is just too small for deer.

I was hunting deer with a 223. I have taken several with the 223. I shoot the 63 gr Sr bullet. Some people may think caliber is too light for deer, but I say that depends upon where you intend to hit them and the size of the deer. Where I hunt, the deer are small, a 150 lbs field dress is a brute. Most I have shot where shot in the neck and did not take another step. 2 where shot broadside through the lungs, where the bullets passed completely through. I am more picky about shot placement with this caliber. Also will not shoot into cover if there is not a reasonable opening. My 2 hunting guns both shoot 1/2" groups regularly and never over 1" at 100 yards. With the lite recoil I use a rifle scope on the handgun.
