450 Marlin
« on: November 11, 2005, 02:05:53 AM »
Might have found a deal on new NEF in 450 Marlin; been sitting on the deaer's shelf for some time.
Was wondering about recoil in a single shot; has anybody had one ported, and what about scope problems?

Used to have the encore katahdin (carbine barrel) in 450 marlin,  recoil was there but not unmanageable, but the noise from the compensator made the gun unpleasant to shoot. I was using ear plugs and muffs to line it up.  If I had another 450 I would not want any porting.

I have a 450 Marlin Ultra, which is a very good shooter. Like you, I knew
about one that had been on the rack for a long time & I caught the Dealer
in a trading mood. I traded some 7.62x39 ammo that I did not like and
a little cash & got a great deal! My gun has a steel rod in the butt for
reduced recoil. I will probably remove it, but I have not as yet. I use a
slip on pad so I am not immune to recoil, but the rod huirts the gun's
balance. Set the gun up properly & recoil will be manageable.

Gauging recoil from one shooter to another is a tough thing to do! Best to look at what you know and compare it. I have shot this gun i this caliber and it very closely compares to the 45-70 with my heavy handloads. It also compares to my 12 ga handi with 2 3/4 remington slugger slugs, heavy .

Someone here once posted a neat chart that would figure recoil in pounds feet. based on the bullet and the weight of the firearm shooting it. Hopefully they will post up.

Tim seems quick on the answer button, was it you Tim???
