Looking for .45 Colt load
« on: November 10, 2005, 07:59:17 AM »
I own a box of 185 gr. LSWC and I can't seem to find a light load for the .45 Colt using AA #5 powder.  If anybody can point me to a source for that load I'd appreciate it.  The AA website does not  have it.

Thank you, I'll go with the 9.2, I think that's what the Accurate book said for the 200 gr. LSWC and it should do for the 185s as well.  There'll be some kids shooting this gun and that's the reason for the light bullet and powder load.

Well, I made up fifty of them and then checked the book and it says 10.6 grains for a 200 gr LSWC!  SO, these are going to real powder puff loads if the bullet even clears the barrel!

Although I do not have a load to offer you. I just want to say becareful of super light charges of fast burning powder in this and other such sized cases.

If you feel you must have a super light load use the bulkiest powder you can find and add a filler on top to help keep the powder near the primer. I have used corn meal, (Too heavy) Oat meal, (Makes you hungey) Super granex shotshell buffer.

If you invision a cross section of the 45 colt case with a bullet seated. Invision the powder inside, if held horizontal. Is the powder over the primer flash hole? If no, you need more powder, or a different recipe, as this is a recipe for detonation. Detonation is a very dangerous thing. It can destroy your gun and anything in close proxcimity.

Personally I say, if I need less recoil I shoot less gun. I stay away from these superlight loads! I value my gun and my hands and face too much to gamble.

Just FYI, I hope you never have this problem. I offer it for informational value.

The 9.2 gr. load was indeed a real powder puff.  My future loads with all be 10.2 gr. minimum.
