I have noticed in recent days that the press is talking about the country of Niger in Africa in connection with the investigation of the outing of the CIA agent.
They are pronouncing it "Neejair". I grew up calling it Niger with a long 'I' as in 'pine'. My dictionary agrees with me. You suppose they changed it to further remove it from the very similar word with 2 G's?

Funny how pronunciations change, remember the 7th planet Uranus, the stressing of syllables has changed quite a bit.

Actually I think it's due to the amount of French spoken throughout Africa.
Nee-Jair would be the French pronunciation.
