Just how well did the Handi's do at the Pdog shoot last year???? I've made my mind up to be there this year. My 357 Max is the only thing I got that comes close to being a varmint cartridge, but I got about 150 pounds of monotype, so I can make some nice cast varmint bullets, but about 150-200 yards is all I could reasonably expect this rifle to whack them little critters at reliably.

so I got a couple questions...

What would you consider the honest average range for pickin' them little buggers off?

If you was buying a rifle to dedicate to shooting Pdogs with once a year, would it be a Handi?

Which chambering performed better, the 243 or the 223?

Was anyone shooting a 25-06 or bigger? How did they show for themselves?

For those who have done a bunch of this, figuring that 250-300 yards is the max average range for this game, how do you think a 30-30 shooting 125-130 grainers would be?

What kind of accuracy to you really need for the exercise to not be a waste of time or ammo?

You really need 2 barrels for a steady shooting session...my spin on it...get a 204...and a 22-250...you should be set ...and it does have to shoot extreamly well....go back and check the post on the PD forum ...you'll see....

John there was some 500yrd 600yrd shots taken most were in the 200 to 300 yrd with a good number of 300 to 400yrd. I had 22-250, 223, 204, 243, 22hornet also had a 17hmr that never made it out of the truck. The 22hornet was for close in and got used the least. The 22-250 was the long range artillery, the 223 got the most use then the 204 for 100 to 200yrds the 243 would turn them into a mist I mean disappear. I brought back 682 empty cases and would guise a hit avareg close to 75%. A 25-06 should be good but what happens is you get to heating up some guns so you need to trade off. Hick Dennis has too many just borrow one or two of his  .

The first gun I grab at a p.d.town is the 917 Marlin,as it makes very little noise, and you can shoot for quite awhile before the little boogers go down in there hole.( its good out to 175 yds.). Then I grab the 223 Ultra and use it to 300 yds. It only shoots 1/2" groups so after 300 yds or so I put it down and grab the Ruger in 220 Swift, and its good for any distance I can hold it still for. My 204 and 22 250 shows a lot of promise but I don't think that they will ever match the accurcy of the 220 Swift. Don't worry to much about getting a barrel for the P.D. shoot because I have lots of extra barrels and another Ruger in 220 Swift that you can use.Just make sure you show up.   Digger

I registered for this forum just to respond to this thread.  Where is this p'dog shoot?  Sounds awesome.  I just purchased an NEF in .22 Hornet and plan on some other barrels in the near future.  I had, but regrettably sold, a .308 Handi a few years ago.

try to snag a 223 or 204 before you go. i shot some way out there but i would say the most of them where at about 200 yards the closest was oh maybe 10 feet with my 22mag hand gun . although me  fuzzy and wes did get quite a few at spiting range just before leaving one day        ( i know rich and wes remember that one) between the 3 of us we got maybe 50 or so in about 2 minuets.

but any how i think you'll be a lot happier with a true varmint gun and after you go once you'll buy a lot more varmint handi's just ask me dennis and john we grabbing every varmint handi we can get our hands on now.

I hope we convinced John to come out there.
Looks like we have. Paul and myself just kept filling his ear full of the shoot  till maybe he felt he just has to try it. I know he will have a good time.
But I'm warning you fellas... John can shoot a Handi.
Ditchdigger,  Looks like we got a new addition.

Hmm... let's see.... 50 cents a round times 5000. Sure keep it for a year, just as long as you pay me $2500 up front, you can KEEP the rifle AND the scope.  :-D  :-D  :-D

Last year was a blast, the 223 Ultra did a fine job on them dogs, but my longest shot was taken with the 204Ruger.

I'll have a new Pdog set up maybe 2 for next years shoot.
The 22-243AI I'll start work on it in late Jan or early February.

If I can sweet talk my loving wifey poo into it, I'll sell the 223 Heavy bull barrel and buy a Ruger 223 in Target Grey.

I found out really fast while shooting them dogs that, the 2-5 shot was the cats meow, let me explain myself.

My 204 Ruger was in the Ruger Target Grey holds 5 rounds.
I would set down at my bench with a full mag. and 1 in the tube and find a mound with dogs on it.
Let’s say this mound has only 3 dogs on it. I would get settled in take aim and shoot 1 dog work the bolt (not taking my eye off of the dogs on the mound) and shot dog #2 and so on. The 204 Ruger has next to 0 recoil so I was able to watch impacts (hehe I loved that part) but the best part was I could leave the scope on the dog that was next or move the scope to the next dog while working the bolt.

When I switched to the H&R I really felt wanting. I would see a mound with 2-5 or maybe more dogs on it at say 250 yards. I would smoke dog 1 but then I would have to remove the rifle from the rest to eject and reload. Then I would have to find that mound again. Please don’t get me wrong I love the accuracy out of this 223 Ultra (tack driver) but it really did leave me with the feeling of wanting more.

So if I can swing it I'll try and get me another Ruger Target Grey but in 223.

And as for the 22-243AI this will be fun cartridge to play with 60gr. V-Max's running at 4000fps (well will see) that might blow up a P dog not sure.
