pistol optics?? cant decide
« on: August 12, 2005, 06:05:26 PM »
i bought a ruger mark III hunter yesterday and its awesome!! but im kind of in a dilema! i cant decide what optics to put on it! i cant decide whether i should put a weaver 2-8X28 pistol scope or an ATN digital ultra sight on it! i will mainly be target shooting at 25 yards and maybe 50 yards. and in the winter squirrel hunting. but in the summer i will be target shooting and just plinking at cans and small birds at pretty close ranges(10 to 15 yards 25 or 30 max.) i would like the magnification of the scope for squirrel hunting and 25 and 50 yard targets but i would also like the quick aquisition of the ATN digital. should i buy both and just switch them out during the summer and winter or would that be too much of a hassle or should i just get one of them and keep it on year round?? also if you were in my situation and had to choose one of these which one would you go with?? thanks for your help!!

ATN holo optics are JUNK. Some people may have great luck with them but I have not. I bought one three years ago to use on my action pistol. The sight skips from one sight graphic to another each and every shot. I’ve tried numerous times to contact ATN about this issue and have failed in getting a response. The sight I have is JUNK and the customer service they offer is so pitiful it should be illegal.

For hunting the crosshair magnifying scopes are better. If you want some plinking fun and speed shooting at targets and such the dot sights or Bushnell holo sight cannot be beat. If I wanted a scope to do both I would look for a dot sight of some sort with the smallest MOA dot you can find. I believe there are some of these sights with 1 MOA dots. I believe these would be perfect.

One thing about dot and holo sights, before you buy, see if the gun store will allow you to go outside and look through it on a very bright sun shinny day. Sometimes bright sunlight will was away the illuminated dot.

Take Care,
Scott

The Weaver 2-8x is a good scope on my Contender, but find I use the 4-5x for hunting. The 6-8x can only be shot off a rest  I have a red dot but prefer the cross hairs for target and hunting as my old eyes need the magnifaction. Hope this helps.

Bushnell Holosight.....check it out. I have one on my Encore .44 mag for deer hunting that i've fallen in love with, and just ordered another one for my Mark III hunter. Same usage as you, plinking and squirrellin' and such. They're a few bucks more, but well worth it. I haven't experienced any sunshine wash-out with it...I tested it into a sunset the first time out, adjusted up the brightness and was very pleased. Just have to remember to tone that sucker down when the sunlight gets a little less intense!
I like the full reticle; it's easier to find and center than a regular red dot type of setup.
