454 bullet in a 410/45 colt NEF
« on: November 17, 2005, 07:45:57 AM »
I went to my gunsmith’s house last night.  We actually put a 454 casull bullet in my NEF 45colt/410 rifle and it seated completely and closed with no problem.  He said that if it would do that, then I could probably shoot the 454 bullet in it.  any opinions on that from anybody?

I wouldn't recommend it, the 454 casull generates twice the pressure of the 45 colt, at 50,000CUP compared to 25,000CUP for the colt. I think it would ruin the SB1 frame. Might work fine on an SB2 frame, though.

EDIT: And welcome aboard!! :D

Here's a comparison of the cartridge dimensions...

I don't know what kind of velocities you can get out of the 45/410 barrel with standard ammo, but handgun velocities leave it well short of a 100yd deer cartridge, even if the unsighted 45/410 barrel had sights or a scope mount.

If you can load up some of the +P ammo or buy some from Corbon, you'll be on the right track...

jl7030--Welcome

First off the 45/410 was never designed to be a 100 yard gun , granted it may shoot 100 yards but how accuratly is anyones guess .

As for your gunsmith telling you that if it fits , then it should shoot is just plain dangerous .

Tim is right about standard 45 lc handgun ammo not being up to snuff , your best bet would be to get a 44 mag or 45/70 handi with a sb2 frame .

I have a 45/410 handy, it's a fun gun.  With just the bead sight and .45 loads that equal the acp bulls eye load ( 5gr unique under a 200gr lswc) I could hit a clay pigeon at 100 yds 8 out of 10 times, but this is not a hunting load ( or a quick sight picture ).  When loaded with heavier loads (21gr H110 under a 300gr xtp or jfp) I could still make the same hits but used a LOT of kentucky windage.  I had a scope mounted and things got better quicker site picture and more hits with both loads.  If I were to rescope I would use a red dot  ( don't have to take the scope off to shoot the 410 shells).   hope this helps.....lost
