Sorry to hear some of you had bad experiences the first week of deer season. We here in Missouri also have our share of road hunters, spotlighters, and other assorted undesirables plaguing the woods during the season. Thankfully because of the surplus of deer above the Missouri River a lot of the foreign jerks are now going there. Now all we here in the Ozarks have to deal with is the local breed of the same.
I had planned to take my 44 mag out this year but experienced erratic accuracy (oh no not again) the day before season. Turned out to be a loose scope mount. Instead I switched to my .308 barrel. I spent the first two days trying to keep the wind from blowing me out of the stand. Well it wasnt quite that bad but it was interesting as the first day it gusting out of the south and the next just as strongly out of the north. The third day there wasnt a breath of wind in the morning but it was supposed to rain by mid morning. I guess I was day dreaming because about 7:30 I looked up and saw a doe out in the open about 50 yards from me. I call this common phenomenon the case of the instant deer. Just like mushrooms they seem to pop right up out of the ground. This doe had made me but couldnt quite figure out just what I was and this allowed me to slowly take aim and drop her with one shot. I got her out of the woods just in time to beat the rain. Needless to say I am very happy with the Handi and as I still have an any deer tag will be back in the woods as soon as the current spat of bad weather lets up. As I have a deer headed for the freezer the pressure is off and I can pick and choose the days I want to hunt. :grin:

Congrats on the doe..and scoring with your Handi...I hope to be back in the woods Friday morning..and hopefully there won't be any exspensive interference this time out..($761.50 for Jeep repairs)...You never quite know what's going to happen...till you are there though...I'll give it another try...before I do anything else..I owe it to myself...but if things continue along the same path...we may pick up the bow full time and leave the rifle season behind... it's something I've been giving serious consideration to....

Another option would to check out your states black powder or primitive weapons season. I have several friends who refuse to hunt the regular gun season but are avid black powder hunters. At least in my experience the people who shoot black powder seem to be better mannered and respectful of others rights. I guess it comes with knowing you have only that one shot and you dont want to mess it up either for your self or for some one else. I find that same attitude with people who shoot Handi rifles.

Thats exactly what I have found & have had better luck with BP than gun season

The aggravation you guys have to put up with is something I know very little about. Because I can hunt in piece with practically no competition from other hunters. Except for goose hunting, but when it gets really cold the sunshine hunters stay home.

BP hunting is an alternate when hunting from a stand, I never tried it.
These new BP rifles are very accurate and they should be more than adequate to bring down a deer at 100 yards.

Saw a guy at the range shooting at a full size deer target at 100m with a peep sight making 10 killing shots in a row. The 8" group was not all that shabby. I toke a shot too and hit the deer target shootig a 50 cal bullet with a handful of powder. Eh, I loved that set trigger.

i've done a good bit of shooting with inlines and let me say that a not so shabby group would be a inch at 100 .

you really should give inlines a try fred they are a lot of fun to play with and are a great weapon for deer hunting i've killed one passed 200.

Mitchell.

This was an old time rifle with long wood and a long barrel like the old Kentucky rifle. But nevertheless a replica, very nice though. Not me but he was shooting off hand. He sure was good with that old timer.

The in-line modern stuff is a totally different kettle of fish. I got so much shooting stuff I don't feel like starting with muzzle loading. A cap and ball pistol would be to my liking but only shooting at the range is allowed with pistols.

Besides another Handi like the 257R will keep me busy for another year, I simply don't have enough time to fit in BP shooting.

The 223 barrel is going to Ron to get rebored to 6x47 after I do an octagon job on it. It will use the same case as a 204. That I think will be my last Handi, one for deer and one for gophers.
