Why do you need to register it? If it were me I would keep it and shoot it. Since you bought it from an individual there is no law saying it has to be registered.

You bet that Big Brother over at the ATF has some regulation regarding this gun and you'd best keep it well hidden, melt it down, or find out what the regs are.  Its basically a time bomb.

tomhargrove:  something like that could be a real quick ticket to lost gun rights and possible jail time.  There are certainly regulations covering such devises and such may even be classified as 'homemade' which may not be legal.

BATF most certainly has its regulations posted on-line - I believe all government agencies are required to do so.  The regulations governing the issue at hand may even date back to the Gun Control Act of the 1930s.  Check the regulations first - it may be a simple matter to resolve.

If you think it illegal surrender the frame (minus every single part you can salvage) or destroy it, cut your losses, purchase a legal frame from a legal dealer and re-build.  Don't make a mistake that could cost you your rights.  Mikey.

according to the atf regs if you can legally own a gun you can legally build a gun if it complies with the regs, meaning it is a legal firearm and not a fullauto or short barreled shotgun etc. However if you build it, you can never sell it, because you as the builder would become the manufacturer. I don't know what your postion would be, since you are on the recieving end but the person who built it and traded or sold it to you, would be in trouble for manufacturing a firearm. You could check on
www.homegunsmith.com it is a forum. There is a good bunch of guys there who all build all their own firearms including 1911's

hope this helps

No offense, but the LAST thing I would have done was post this on a public forum.
You could get an invitation to the 10 and 10 club.
Ten years in jail and ten thousand bucks in fines.
The fines would be bad enough but the time would be bothersome.
Used to be an individual could build his own firearm ( not talking blackpowder here) with no issue but you could not ever give/sell/loan the thing.
Today I don't know.
You can call the BATF office in your area and they will help you with info and not ask your name.
I think???
Truth is they aren't after a person with innocent intentions but I wouldn't advertize thing.
Check out the regs online 1st to be safe.
Actually the fellow that made the thing then 'sold' it to you is in deep doo-doo big time if the Feds get wind of this.
