Bug bite again, 45-70 at home.
« on: November 15, 2005, 10:16:04 AM »
I just receive my like-new Handi SB2 45-70.

Wohhh, look exactly as my 22H except chamber and bore !.
Previous owner didn't shoot-it too much, "just sighting a scope".

I have my Trilogy; 22H, 30-30 and now 45-70. I'm happy.

What make me less happy is 2 weeks of waiting before testing at the range. That will let me a lot of time te re-read all on the subject.

I've some questions:
. The rifle came with 2 boxes of Winchester Super X, 300Gr jacketed hollow point. It will be my recoil reference, how it could be classified; light, medium or on the heavy side.

. Maybe half of post are for the  45-70 Buffalo Classic. May i use all was said, except barrel lenght, for the SB2.

Pascal,

Good for you!  I have a 22" barrel I bought used and I really like it.

The 300 gr Win is going to be loaded for Trapdoors, so it won't be so much heavy recoil, like Mac likes.  This site has some low velocity loads for the .45-70 using Vithavouri powder that might be easier for you to find.  The group size (GS) is pretty impressive on several loads they list.

The 405 gr bullets will eat up a lot of lead, but as much as you cast, you must already have a pretty good supply.

Are you going to fit this one with a supressor?

EDIT: I was reviewing another post you made and noticed you had posted the site I mentioned above, so I guess that wasn't new information!  Oh well, I tried to be helpful.

and another advantage with the 45/70 is that you can stop 2 or 3 rioters at once if you line'em up like my friend Matthew Quigley once told me he did once Down Under.

It is a 22" barrel. I've no access to barrel program so i must buy rifle and they are scarce. Seem that they won't be imported, no more !. I'll probably stop now, 308w is a good caliber but here a lot of paperwork needed for it. I dream of a 45acp Handi but it didn't exist.

The more i look, touch, use them. The more i love them. They are simplicity, even a falling block (and i dream about) look sophisticated beside.

I'll put a scope one it, better for my eyes. I bought a Leupold FXIII 12x, but i feel that a "simple" peep-sight could be enjoyable.

Paul, you are right. I'll put a suppressor on it, and somewhere it's a shame. I like this barrel, thick as 12ga and a nicely recessed crown. But the suppressor will permit me to shoot it more !. It's a removable part, so time to time i'll hear his loud voice, neighborhood also.
Feel free to help, all your advices are welcome ( i may or may not follow them, i could also forget, that's life  :-) ).

Finally i'll fit a bipod and eventually a monopod to increase stability for paper punching.

This nice rifle probably never have a chance to do what it had made for: hunt and kill with one precisely adjusted shot in the respect of the game.

Ian,
i'll try your idea with 2 or 3 "paper" targets. It could help to punch more X and spare good lead in the same time :) .
