Thank you Jeff :D

It was a fun hunt for sure. My buddy had a tick bite they found on the back of his leg in June. Problem is its a different strain then what they have been seeing here. He has been in pain all summer, couldn't walk hardly cause it hurt and he had fevers and went from 192 lbs to 110lbs because he couldn't keep food down. He had his first solid food in mid September and is healing, but still very weak. The only thing they can do for the disease is give you antibiotics and you have to ride it out.  I am wearing his hat in the picture by the truck. I wanted to wear it hunting but I guess I had to have a blaze orange hat in Nebraska. I feel his hat did bring me some luck anyway.  I hope he comes with me next year  because boy I sure do love that mule deer hunting. Oh I want to wish everyone good luck this year hunting to. One more thing, Jeff at least we will be able to see the deer good  with the snow on the ground this year. Wisconsins gun season opens this Saturday  :)

Congrats on the deer, Norse!!! Sorry to hear about your buddy and lyme disease, from all I've read on it, it's no fun. The worst thing about it is once the symptoms occur, it's too late. Antibiotics need to be administered at the time of infection, but some folks show no sign of the bite, the typical bullseye rash. Once it gets a head start on ya, it's not a happy time. A friend, his wife and son all have had it for years, it will never go away once the damage is done, hopefully there will be a vaccine for humans as there already is for dogs, soon!

To prevent bites, I wear permethrin treated clothing that kills em on contact. I've been using it for several years and haven't been bitten yet, but I've had lots of ticks on my clothing many times, they just crawl a bit and drop off. I wear tick gators on my boot tops and check often when walking thru any brush or grass that might harbor the little pests, ya just can't be too careful, specially in the spring woods.

Jeff,

I seen 16 Deer my first day and about 18 -20 my 2nd day when I got my buck (all were mule deer I seen). I passed up 4 bucks during the hunt. I have 4 friends who hunt on there uncle's ranch in South Dakota and they seen over 100 deer on opening day(wish I could get on that place). I was hunting the plains region in Nebraska

Nice deer, way to go Norseman!  Don't be bashful give us some more details about your hunt.  Did you hire a guide?  Did you hunt out of a base camp? How many days did you hunt?  What was the terrain and weather like?  How long did you have to stock him before you got close enough for a shot?  What gun/scope did you use?

Thanks Bret,
Well I had a 5 day hunt and my buddy and I booked a hunt for nebraska with an guide service. This is the first time I ever booked a guide service. The last couple of years I hunted colorado, but I wanted to try Nebraska because I never hunted deer there before and private land is very hard to get on.... :( . The Rancher was my guide ( funny how that worked out) But they were very nice people .  The terrain I hunted was flat plains and some big sand hills with no trees but, lots of silk weed and some tall prairie grass to crawl through. My guide and I had spotting scopes  and we did alot of spot and stalk hunting. We also just did alot of walking on the sand hills and every time we got to a high point we crawled up to it and looked over it very carefully and thats when we spotted my buck. All the sudden I was looking  him and 5 other bucks and about 12 does. I was about a  150 yards higher than the deer and he was only about 100 yards away.  I was using my 25-06 bolt gun my buddy made for me with a 6 x18 weaver scope( please forgive me I don't have a handi in a larger caliber yet but am working on it I did bring my ultra .223 handi for yotes and dogs though)  Well I put the scope right behind the shoulder and I shot over him. He spun around and Brian said "John you shot high!" I put another round in and I aimed behind the shoulder and at the base this time and boom he went down. It was a little higher then I liked but lesson learned and I should of known  better. I will practice shooting at very steep angles in the future I promise you.   I am also going to get a 25-06 barrel for my handi. I have debated on what caliber to get for my handi for deer hunting but in all honesty I love the 25-06.
