Scope recommendations-help me out please
« on: March 21, 2003, 05:56:06 AM »
I need a new pistol scope to put on my 7-30 Waters for Wyoming antelope this year. It will be my first time handgun hunting the goats and I feel I need something with a little more magnification than the burris 1.5-4x I currently use on it.  The Nikon 2.5-8x has my interest as I have experience with the nikon riflescopes and like them. Does anyone use this scope? Any other input or recommendations are welcome as well. Thanks!

The Nikon that you mentioned is fine, but perhaps a little too much magnification.

I would strongly look at the Bushnell Elite 2x-7x first which has 20 inches of constant eye relief.

I would then take a look at the Burris 2x-7x (which I currently own on my 454 Casull with no problems).  My only complaint about the Burris is that, even though I have power up to 7x, I really can't get past 4x because the scope "blacks-up" meaning that I can't see through it and thus have to bring my eye much closer to the scope.

Higher magnification won't help you if you can't use it!  That's why next time I will buy the Elite because I can mount it in a specific setting and use it's full magnification range.

Hey foxcaller,

The Bushnell Elite is actually a 2-6x32 not 2-7.  Its ok Zachary, it has been a long week in the office.

The 3200 is a very nice scope indeed. I have a friend who has one and if it was offered in a 2.5-8x model I would have one in a minute. I really want the higher magnification. My Burris is a great scope so I may indeed look into the 2x7. What about the Weaver and TC scopes, are they worth looking into? Weaver has a 2x8 model and I believe TC has a 2x7 and a 3x9. My buddy has another scope that seems very nice, it is a Simmons Gold medal 2x7 any input on these? I can't find them in any catalog though so I don't know if it is still available.

I had a Thompson Contender pistol in 7-30 waters with the Bushnell Elite 2x6 scope.  It was excellent!!!

foxcaller,

After several bad experiences with Simmons, I simply cringe every time I hear the "S-word."

Granted, many people like them very much and are loyal to them, like the other "S-group" (Savage).  To these folks I can only say "Okay."

I just happen to think that, for handgun scopes, and of all those that I have personally used, the only ones that I would consider are Elite 3200, Leupold, and Burris.

Yeah, I hear that. I'm not too high on Simmons either, I have had a couple over the years that were ok but mostly used them on 22's. I have both Leupold and Burris handgun scopes now, a Leupold 2x and a Burris 1.5-4x. I have no complaints with either, just want something in the 7x to 8x range. I really can't see that a 6x will do anything for me that my 4x won't currently do. Heck, I'm not sure a 7x or 8x will help all that much either. I believe you mentioned this in your first reply. I just am thinking the 8x would be the way to go for an antelope hunt and don't have the $ for the 2.5-8x Leupold which is what I really would like to have. Maybe I sould sell the Burris and then get the 2.5-8x Leupold as it covers all the ground the 1.5-4x Burris does and more. I still haven't heard from anyone with the Nikon scope though. It looks very nice and is about 150 bucks less than the Leupold.

The Nikon is great.  Its optics are clear and bright, and its tracking, at least on the fixed pistol scope that I shot, was excellent.

I can recommend the Nikon, it's just that I REALLY recommend the Elite.
