I recently read "Gunpowder: The History of the Explosive that Changed the World" by Jack Kelly. It is a absolutely incredible book that goes into great details concerning the development and use of what we now call Black Powder. It isn't dry and academic, I found it an enjoyable read that I had difficulty putting down. (Then again I find reading ballistic tables interesting.)
