Equipment: Weapons would be two single action action revolvers, .32 or larger, Lever action rifle chambered in pistol caliber, an SxS or hammered pump gun 20 gauge - 10 gauge. Of course you will need leather to hold yer revolvers, method of transport fer guns 'n ammo at the range, ergo a gun cart. Also under the equipment thing: clothing! Period or near period correct duds, foot gear 'n head cover. Also eye & ear protection!!!!!! That's the bare minimum, theres also side match guns like pocket pistols, derringers, long range lever guns, 'n single shot Buffler gunz! many folks never get into these side match guns at all though. But if you get into NCOWS stuff, they tend to incorperate a lot of pocket pistol shootin into thier main match stages.
Ammo can be smokeless or BP depending on what catagory ya wanna shoot in. And yes you can buy BP ammo over the counter. It's expensive! If you aren't a reloader, you soon will be, might as well face up to it and start thinking about what press you want right now!
Recomendations: Get yer main match revolvers and lever gun in the same calibers. Saves hassles at the loading table. Any good SxS in 20 or twelve gauge will do ya fine. Rossi lever guns are cheap and dependable, the work horse of this game. You can sped a lot more money for classy looking guns but they won't shoot any better than the Rossi! Other comments, if yer really into competition big time, make your first set of irons .38s, if yer interestedin the Darkside go with either 44-40 or .45 Colt. thier cheapset to feed and easiest to load with BP.
