New problem: rounds will not extract
« on: September 24, 2005, 05:46:36 AM »
Last time I posted questions regarding my Model 70, rounds were not going into battery and jamming. I replaced the recoil spring with a 16# and the jamming stopped but now the spent rounds will not extract when the magazine is in the gun. When the magazine is removed the rounds fire and extract fine. Can I assume it is the extractor this time?

Could be, but try a different magazine.  Are you shooting light handloads?

Castaway,
I've tried 4 different magazines with 230 grain FMJ Winchester white box ammo. It has also jammed with other brands. Is the removal of the extractor something I can do or is it a gunsmith's job? I've been trying to get this 45 to operate properly for years, maybe I should try another gunsmith.

Extractor can be done at home.

Remove slide from receiver.

push in the firing pin past the firing pin stop with a small diameter nail.  As you hold in the firing pin, slide down the firing pin stop.  Careful, depending on firing pin spring tension, the pin can go flying if you dont cover it with a thumb or something.  Once the firing pin stop is removed and the pin and spring are removed, you can work the extractor out of the slide.   You can now replace it, work it over or what ever you feel it takes to fix it.   ...now is also the time to replace the stock firing pin and/or spring to better suit your needs.

randyt - you may have hit upon the problem.  The pistol doesn't work properly when the magazine is in place.  Is the magazine loaded or empty when you try this???  You said she jammed before you replaced the recoil spring but now she fails to extract - those are two different problems.  Your magazine springs may have too much tension and that might prevent the fired cases from extracting.  She works fine and extracts fine without the mags.  You said you have 4 different mags, try another first.

BTW, does she extract properly when you manually work the slide when a loaded mag is in place?  Does she extract properly without the mag in place.  If she extracts properly under both those conditions I would say it is the magazines.

Something to try - empty the mags and work the slide a number of times and see if any of the mags show drag marks anywhere - they might fit too tightly.  Also, remove the slide and see how the mags sit or fit into the magazine well and if they sit too high.

You didn't describe what happens when a fired case fails to extract - does the rim hang up on the next round in the mag - does the bullet of the next round come nose up so far that the case being extracted impacts against the bullet and stops, or does the extractor slip out of the extraction groove on the case.  If the bullets come 'nose up' too far, it is a magazine problem.  If the extractor slips out of the extractor groove it is an extractor problem.   Let us know.  Mikey.

I'm going to make everyone with a custom tuned extractor cringe, but...my trusty old Springfield Armory Mil Spec started to fail to extract after about 10 years of use (on and off for the last 5 years).  I was at the range and wanted to complete my shooting practice for an upcoming match.  I borrowed two pairs of vise grips from another shooter and proceeded to remove the extractor at the range.  With the help of the two vise grips, I put a "tuned" bend back into the extractor and "forcefully" repositioned it into the slide.  That was two years ago......and its still running like a champ.

Before investing in a custom tuned extractor, try a little bending and re-install.  Not too much, or you'll have a very difficult time removing it again.  If this solves your extraction problems...and probably will...you can make the decision to stick with "your" hand tuned extractor or ordering a new one from one of the "name" suppliers.

Good Luck.

Jakes,
Actually you don't need any tools to tune a 1911 extractor. I use the extractor channel. Just insert the last third or so of the extractor into the channel and bend ( I mean tune) it a little till you get the right tension on the extractor.

I would confess that bending is tuning.

You guys finally diagnosed the problem. I built more than a few 1911s in 20 years of law enforcement and this is likely what happened at one time or the other. Someone dropped a round into the chamber and then dropped the slide on the already chambered round (AND THATS A NO NO) bending the extractor. Inserting the first section of the extractor into the extractor hole and flexing it to the left side of the slide will work. The extractor should be bent only enough that it has to be pushed into position but not forced. If that doesn't work. Replace the extractor.
