Hog worms?
« on: November 16, 2005, 05:29:13 PM »
Shot a 150# red haired sow.  Cleaned her out, skinned her, and had cut off shoulders and ribs for freezing. When I reached the hams and peeled back the bubbly skin covering the meat, I found worms.  Inch to inch and one-half long and rusty blood red in color with white fore and aft ends.  Probably should have seen them earlier in the liver, but didn't look.  Assumed they were tricinosis (muscle cyst forming worms).  Could be wrong, but tossed it all to the alligators just the same.

Anyone have similar experience?  Worms give me the creeps when it comes to meat to eat.

I dunno, from what I know about trichinosis, the worms are tiny....very hard to see.

Well, perhqaps I tossed her for no good reason.  None of the referenced parasites are as I described.  In retrospect, I suppose it could have been a series of blood vessels, but they were certainly not where I would have ordinarily found them and their arrangement was suggestive of something else.  Thanks gentlemen for the excellent references.

:-D  :-D yummy, yummy, yummy, I got worms in my tummy.

I know I have eat my share of worms (had to eat a bunch in survival school), lots of them not knowing they were there, but I just don't think I would really enjoy my ham and eggs if I knew they were there when I peeled the hide back.  If they were internal, thats a different story.

Please pass the biscuits. :D  :D
