Marlin or Winchester 450?
« on: November 05, 2005, 11:35:32 AM »
I need a short quick handling lever action. I've owned a marlin 444 and loved it but I want a shorter gun length and the 450 looks promising with the new hornady ammo out to 200 yds. What are the pros and cons of the marlin and the winchester? I also want to mount a 4x scope on this rifle will that be a problem with the winchester?

crseth,

Personally I would forego both the Marlin and Winchester in favor of a Browning BLR in the .450 Marlin cartridge.  With the Browning you can use spitzer/pointed bullets that really show what the .450 can do.  Lawdog

My humble opinion only.  If you are debating the differences between a Marlin and Winchester it's much like trying to debate the virtues of a
Ford vs. a Chevy.  Get the one that strikes your fancy, fits your shoulder and turns your crank.

THe marlin would be a little easier to mount a scope on unless you go with a scout scope.  I'm very impressed with my marlin guide gun.  I would go with the 45/70 because it is easier to get ammo for and can be loaded to the same level as the 450 is.

I found a used 45-70 Marlin guide gun at a gun shop. The guy said he would take $525 for it with mounts and a new Swift 4X. With the prices of the PMC +P+ 45-70 this might be my best route. The gun has no wear on it at all.

A bunch of folks can and have documented proof the sub 1" groups are common with a 4x scoped marlin at 100 yards and these are 5 shot groups. Open sigts same exact thing at 50 yards. so what's to question? realidahorocks
