I have a 15" Encore in 45-70. Who would be the best person to put a break on this beast? SSk, Custom Shop, OTT? Thanks for your input.

Some times you can find a local gunsmith the will do a great job.

, I too have a 15 inch 45-70 and I can only shoot about 10-15 rounds at a time using full power 405 gr cast bulets
I too am thinking about having the barrel cut back some and put a break on it or sending it off to Mag na port.

WIMP!!!??? :shock: Ok...maybe a little, but this is supposed to be fun and like you said...after about 10 rounds, the fun just seems to stop. I have fired this thing and its very accurate, but I definately dont want to develop a flinch. I have priced SSK arrestor break, custom shop break installation and mag-na-port and the prices all seem close. I just dont know whick would be most effective.

ok...lets try this....A friend of mine suggested getting a 45-70 Katadihn barrel since its already ported and using that on my pistol, then trade of the other barrel. Does this seem like a better option since the barrel is 18" instead of 15"? Will this add to accuracy? What are your thoughts?

My 45-70 came with the break, it's 171/2" overall. Going to add something to my 15" 460 S&W, it is really a handful. Let us know how your break turns out,I've been leaning toward Magna - Porting

what type of hunting are you going to do if at all? an 18 " barreled handgun is real long for most hunting use, might as well just put a stock on it and use it as a rifle. I do see a varment huntier using a bi-pod on such a long barrel but it would be very hard to get a shot from a standing position or from a deer stand. I find the 15 inch barrels to be just on the hard side for field work but from a stand is just about right and 14 inch is better.

I am thinking a bout an OTT shark gill brake and having my barrel cut back and loosing the 2.375"

I will be using it for deer hunting and maybe bear and elk. Most all my hunting is done from a tree stand with a gun rest so I will have plenty of support to hold the thing up. I also use a Contender pistol in 16.25 barrel and dont find it too bad for use.

I guess it would work. A little long, but if it is supported why not. The other thing is it would be like handling a rifle in the stand.

In NY you can only have a pistol barrel thats a max of 15 inches.
I really like the TCs, my favorite was a 10inch 7x30 contender. Dumbest thing I did was to sell it for an Encore. I find the shorter barrels handle more like a handgun. Thinking of getting a 454 w/ a brake but keeping the length about 10 inches.

I would go with the magna-porting.Did this with my 308 15" encore and love shooting now, it was a hand full before with max loads.

Try EABCO (E. Arthur Brown). They have at least three different types of muzzle brakes. They have done a fine job on my pistol barrels and the brakes are very effective.

I had a 308 Encore, put the TC brake on it, this reduced the muzzle rise and directed the recoil straight back. The Lone Eagle I shot had a brake with holes all the way around this reduced both muzzle rise and rearward recoil.

I spoke with Mike from OTT and I think Im gonna have him install the brake. After doing some researching, I think this will be the best option. Thanks for all the input. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Does the break count toward barrel length if it's properly attached? I have a 14" 204 Ruger barrel for my Contender that I'd love to try with a stock, but obviously won't be going there. I'm a machinist, and have thought about building and adding a brake to make the barrel legal carbine length, but have not found anything that says it'll be legal at 16.5 OAL with the break. Any Ideas?

Buzz,
It can be legal however you will have to make it a permanent part of the barrel. And by permanent as in welded or blind pinned on, not just screwed real tight.

Ron, Thanks. I have a plan to use a small heat treat oven to warm the break and put an interference fit on it maybe .002". I'd have to refer to my Machinery's Handbook again for the exact fitment. I'll turn the barrel a bit to give a shoulder to slip up against, but not enough to change the bore diameter. I have a setup for the lathe that'll let me turn the barrel without marking the finish. I recrown without a problem. I'll let you know how it turns out

Check the BATFE Guidelines just to be sure that you'll be covered. In reality I doubt that even if you had an agent at the range with you that he or she would care enough to even look or ask, but you always want to cover your rear end. Let us all know how it turns out.
