another Williams sight question and Ammo for the Leaver guns
« on: November 21, 2005, 10:05:33 AM »
I thought of some more stuff... (sorry:)

Does anyone know where I can get the knob that replaces the normal screw in the side of the williams rear aperture sight on my 39A. This is the screw that has to be loosened with a screwdriver before adjusting the elevation. The knob I am looking for replaces this screw and makes it possible to tighten and loosen with out a screwdriver. I have seen them but I have not found them on Brownells and my web search for williams gun sight company has not led me to the main company page yet.

ALSO, if anyone else shoots the 39A or the Winchester 9422 what ammo do you recomend. I normaly use ELEY Match EPS in my expensive silhouette bolt actions, but is this what I need to feed the leaver actions too? How much better have you found the target stuff to shoot over the cheaper stuff like WInchester Super X???

I shoot my Marlin 39 with factory sights so I can't really help you with the Willams question.  I am however, dying to put my Marbles tang sight on and try it out.

As for the ammo, I have found HUGE differences in target stuff at the turkey and ram line.  Unfortunately I'm not much for punching paper so my only experience is empirical data collected from shooting silhouettes. So here's my results...

I started using American Eagle 38 gr hollow points because they were shooting really good at 50 yds. (okay so I did shoot paper once)  I started shooting IHMSA cowboy silhouettes and for one year my scores were always in the 25-28 range.  Generally I was only missing a couple targets total at the chicken and pig line, but I couldn't hit a target at the turkey and ram line.  Suspecting the ammo (afterall it couldn't be my skills!)  LOL, I turned to some Wolf Match Target.  I had one practice session to get sight settings and then shot a 36 at the next match.  That has been a couple of years ago and my worst score since then has been a 31 I think...okay maybe I did have a 30.  So I would tell you that for me it has been imperative to use a standard velocity target round for turkies and rams.  Your mileage may vary however.

Ramshooter,
I tested ammo at 100m for my 9422. Wolf match Tgt shot best. I tried about a dozen different brands but nothing real real expensive. The Wolf match tgt. shot better than match extra and was head and sholders above cci silhouette, WW T22, Pmc scoremaster. There were others but I don't remember all. The screw you want is available from Williams. I have ordered 2. They are not catalog items but are available. You will probably have to shorten the screw slightly. I did for a 9422.

As has already been mentioned, the screw you're looking for is available from Williams but you'll have to call them to order it. It's the one that goes in the side of their deluxe target sight, and you'll definitely have to shorten it (grind or dremel cutting wheel) for it to work. I have those screws in all three of my lever gun sights now and it's a lot easier to use.

I'd also recommend that you get some "appliance touch-up" paint to mark the elevation knob on your sight. Nothing that I've seen is tougher and it just costs a couple bucks for a "white-out" size bottle at Home Depot or Lowes. That makes it a lot easier to be sure where you sight is at any time. For instance, my Marlin 39a's chicken setting is "white mark toward muzzle, 2 1/8 turns from bottomed out." Then I set the other settings based on that settings. Just a glance down at the sight lets me know if I've adjusted the sight for my next animal yet.

As for ammo, I tried out a total of 18 different types of ammo initially in the Marlion 39a and have tried 6 more since then. The WMT didn't shoot significantly better than a few other types, like CCI Silhouette (just mini-mags with less flyers) or Federal Lightning. Since I use it for my scoped silhouette rifle, I decided to use WMT anyway. My first two matches, I rang two rams and then three. A couple other very good shooters up here had told me I might have that problem, but I had the mindset that I'd rather hit the animals and have them not fall than miss them due to inaccuracy. Needless to say, I changed my mind just as they predicted I would. I'm not good enough a shooter to be able to lose points on animals that I hit well, so I switched to something a little faster. Last month, I shot a 35 with the Federal Automatch and won the match. This month, I shot a 32 (mind was off, as baby was due anytime) and only lost by a point or two. If you use standard velocity ammo, keep in mind that the lever action targets are MUCH larger and heavier than the scoped rifle targets that will fall with nearly any hit at all. Hitting the lever action ram targets low in the body, especially toward the front leg, with standard velocity ammo can lead to frustration.
