O.k. fellas, am I doing something wrong or what? Every time I shoot my .45 cal G2 m/l I clean the living --ll out of my barrel but still have brown rust crud on my patches. I run hot, soapy water up and down the barrel for maybe 50,000 times (slight exageration) but still cannot get a clean patch. They get cleaner, but there is always some rust crud left over. I have also used the T/C bore cleaner with the same results. I use Pyrodex RS. What's the deal? :x

I'm going to assume you get rust after you clean it. If your getting rust because you don't clean it til next season then nothing I can say will help.

Don't use soapy water. Use a good solvent like Rusty Duck followed by a good bore brush. You will also want to use a good oil like Breakfree CLP. I've never had a rust problem in the bore provided I use a good oil.

I use Windex with vinegar to clean my M/L's. I run a patch with the Windex with vinegar and let it sit for about 5 minuets. I then run a brush down the bore several times. I again run a patch with the Windex with vinegar. Then I run clean dry patches until I get clean patches. Then I run a patch with Breakfree followed by a patch with bore butter. Never had rust in my barrels.

If I read you correctly, The rust is coming from the hot, soapy water and rinse cycles. Using an alcohol rinse/patch (use the 90% drugstore variety) after the water rinse, will clear any water left behind.
The steel used in these muzzle loaders is definately the reason for the quick rusting so get it dried PRONTO...then use Ballistol or good penetrating oil like previously mentioned as a last step. Finally, stand your barrel muzzle down to make certain you don't get any water sitting in the breech.

Thanks for the input guys. By using the hot soapy water, I was just doing what I was told. The theory, I guess is that the hottttt water will heatttt the barrel and when the barrel is no longer in the water, the water will evaporate. Anyway, the ideas posted will help me along. Throttleman,

You have to get that barrel VERY hot, so hot you cannot hang onto it without a folded towel or heavy glove around it. Same for the rinse. Once removed though you still need to patch it dry before putting a good oil such as Break Free CLP on it to prevent rusting. The alcohol patch is also a good idea after dry patching and before oiling. The water still needs to be displaced and the metal oiled.
